Since her last appearance in May, Jill’s absence from The Young and the Restless has been a cause of worry for fans of the show. Jill Abbott has been an important character in the CBS soap opera. At present, Jill is the longest-running character on the show. Although The Young and the Restless originally focused on two major families, the Brooks and Foster families, they were eventually replaced with the Abbotts and Williams families.
This makes the character of Jill Abbott one of its oldest and only remaining original characters on the show. Besides being an age-long character, Jill is known for her longstanding feud with Katherine Chancellor. Having appeared in the majority of the soap opera’s seasons, Jill’s absence is an understandable cause of concern. Here’s everything to know about Jill Abbott’s absence on The Young and the Restless.
Who Is Jill Abbott on The Young and the Restless?
The late William J. Bell created the character and was introduced by Bell and John Conboy. The character of Jill Abbott first appeared on The Young and the Restless on March 27, 1973. Jill was introduced as an 18-year-old manicurist working to support her family. Jill was part of the Foster family, the working-class family from the original plot. Jill’s storyline takes an upturn after Katherine Chancellor (Jeanne Cooper) chose to hire her as her personal hairdresser and companion. This brought Jill into the Chancellor’s household. With Katherine’s drinking addiction and shameful affair with their stable boy, Jeff, Jill and Katherine’s husband, Phillip Chancellor II, grew close and began an affair.
Phillip took Jill’s virginity, with the sexual encounter resulting in a pregnancy. This began the age-long feud between Katherine and Jill. Phillip asked Katherine for a divorce, refusing a second chance so he could be with Jill. An enraged Katherine, who was driving Phillip from the airport, drove them off a cliff. Although a hospitalized Phiilip married Jill to legitimize their union and his unborn child’s claim to his fortune, Katherine fought to legally annul the marriage after Phillip’s death. Evicting Jill and her family from the Chancellor’s Estate left them broke. Although Katherine offered $1 million for Jill’s baby, she refused.
Later, Jill began working for Jabot Cosmetics, whose owner was John Abbott. Although she began a romantic relationship with John, she’s later entangled in a love triangle with his son, Jack. After Jill and John divorced, she got 20% of Jabot in their settlement and a seat on the company’s board of directors. A plot twist in 2003 revealed Jill was Katherine’s biological mother. However, in 2008, a DNA test proved they were not related. The feud is reignited, which continues until Katherine’s death. Throughout Katherine’s presence on The Young and the Restless, Jill and Katherine fought over property, children, and men.
Jill Abbott’s Last Appearance on The Young and the Restless
In the May 29 episode of The Young and the Restless, audiences watched in shock as Jill revealed her health status to her son, Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson). Billy, who was yet to return to Genoa City, received a text message from Jill. After ensuring the video chat was private, Jill revealed, “I’ve had some issues with my health. You know, little things. You know, like my heart beating too fast and difficulty in breathing. Just some lightheadedness.”
Despite being pressured by Billy, Jill does not reveal the true nature of her illness. Jill stated she was resting and in good hands with her brother, Snapper (David Hasselhoff). However, fans found it concerning that Jill would abruptly hand over her power at Chancellor-Winters to Billy. She also added that he takes care of Mamie Johnson (Veronica Redd) and steers Chancellor-Winters in the right direction. Also, Jill hinted it was a temporary arrangement as she plans to return to take over the company once her health improves. While it was comforting at the time, her continued absence has made fans question if Jill’s health is worse than she alluded to.
Will Jill’s Health Issue Lead to Her Death?
This has been the biggest question for The Young and the Restless fans worried about Jill Abbot’s prolonged absence from the show. Although absences like these often lead to character exits, there’s no confirmed report this is the case for Jill. Jill Abbott’s absence from The Young and the Restless has been caused by actress Jess Walton‘s brief departure from the show. Jess Walton, who has portrayed Jill since 1987, reportedly requested a six-month break from the show.
To allow for Walton’s break, show writers had to find a way to create Jill’s absence from Genoa City. Judging by this, Jill’s character is expected to return to Genoa City after Jess Walton rejoins the cast. There have also been no announcements concerning recasts, as Walton continues to be a respected cast member on the show.
