Wil Wheaton takes the lead in Stand By Me as Gordie Lachance, a young boy who is grieving the death of his older brother. To that, the journey they embark on to find the missing boy’s body oddly serves as the adventure of his life and a much-needed break from his bleak reality. However, his strong talent for writing also keeps him from sinking too low into depression, a skill that his best friend Chris truly believes in, even if his family don’t.
Stand By Me was a career-launching role for Wheaton, as at such a young age he demonstrated his ability to lead a motion picture. River Phoenix as Chris Chambers
River Phoenix joined the cast of Stand By Me as Chris Chambers, the more boisterous member of the group of friends. To the locals, he’s seen as a thug due to his rough and undesirable family. However, underneath he has a heart of gold, and stands as the only person who really champions Gordie’s writing.
Stand By Me put Phoenix on the map, poising him to be one of Hollywood’s next big stars. After the success of the film, he went on to star in the acclaimed drama Running on Empty, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He then went on to star as a young Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Sadly, before he had the chance to keep climbing, River Phoenix passed away from a drug overdose on October 31, 1993. He was just 23 years of age. Phoenix was the brother of Oscar-winning actor, Joaquin Phoenix.
Corey Feldman as Teddy Duchamp
Corey Feldman was one of the biggest child actors of the 80s. By the time Stand By Me was released, he had already made waves in Hollywood after starring in the family classic, The Goonies. In Stand By Me, Feldman starred as Teddy, a geeky and slightly erratic young man who uses his adventures with his friends as escapism from his abusive father. Stand By Me pushed Feldman further into the spotlight and his career continued to climb. The following year, he starred in The Lost Boys, a vampire comedy that paired him with Corey Haim. The two would go on to star in a string of movies together, becoming known as “The Two Coreys”.
Some of Feldman’s most iconic roles come from movies like Dream a Little Dream, License to Drive, and The ‘Burbs. In recent years, he has slipped off the mainstream radar and appears in many VOD projects. However, he has taken a shift towards music, leading his own rock band.
Jerry O’Connell as Vern Tessio
Jerry O’Connell took on the role of Vern Tessio in Stand By Me. Vern is the quiet and dorky member of the group, who is often the brunt of the banter due to his clumsiness. O’Connell was only 11 years old when he landed his first feature role in the movie. However, he brought forth one of the film’s most memorable and intense moments when he finds himself on a train track with a freight train heading his way. O’Connell’s most notable role after Stand By Me was the lead character in the sci-fi series, Sliders. He also starred in movies like Kangaroo Jack, Jerry Maguire, and Scream 2. Lately, he has mostly featured in the TV realm, regularly lending his voice to the iconic character of Superman and as Captain Jack Ransom in a string of Star Trek animated series.
Kiefer Sutherland as Ace Merrill
Kiefer Sutherland is perhaps the cast member of Stand By Me who went on to become the biggest star. As the son of legendary Hollywood actor Donald Sutherland, Kiefer proved himself as a talent who defied nepotism. Stand By Me served as his breakout role, starring as the despicable bully Ace Merrill. The next year, he re-teamed with Corey Feldman in The Lost Boys, once again starring as a villain. However, he soon broke free from this typecasting, starring as Counter Terrorism Agent Jack Bauer in the 20-time Primetime Emmy-winning series, 24. Yet, he still shines as a villain from time to time, with his sinister rendition in Phone Booth being a standout. In 2024, Sutherland will team with Clint Eastwood for the courtroom thriller, Juror #2.
John Cusack as Danny Lechance
John Cusack‘s role in Stand By Me was small but poignant. Starring as Gordie’s deceased older brother Danny, Cusack features in a few short flashbacks. However, his scenes are possibly the most important moments in the movie, as we learn that he was the only champion of Gordie’s talent for writing. By the time Stand By Me was released, Cusack was a box office draw, after starring in movies like Sixteen Candles and The Sure Thing. After the success of the movie, his stardom continued to rise with iconic roles in movies like Say Anything, Bullets Over Broadway, Con Air, and High Fidelity. In 2024, he is still a bankable star. He recently starred in the acclaimed series Utopia, and is set to star opposite Mira Sorvino in the thriller movie, Fog of War.
Richard Dreyfus as Older Gordie
Stand By Me is opened with a voiceover of a man we later learn to be an older Gordie. Although he is not seen until the end of the movie, Richard Dreyfuss lends a compelling narration throughout that captivates with warmth. Dreyfuss was the biggest star in the movie at the time of its release, off the back of movies like Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and the popular buddy cop movie, Stakeout. In recent years, his roles have become smaller and less often. However, he charmed audiences in 2022 with his role as Santa in the family movie, Saving Christmas. His next role will see him share the screen with Billy Zane, Jon Heder, and Rob Corddry in the semi-autobiographical movie about Marlon Brando, entitled – Waltzing with Brando.
