You might take note that Zazie Beetz has been in two of the most well-known R-rated movies that have scored big at the box office but you might also say ‘so what?’. Well, being dismissive is kind of expected but at the same time it’s easy to see that Zazie is making her way up the ranks as Hayden Mears of ScreenRant has said and isn’t pausing for breath as she goes. In her two big film roles as Domino and Sophie Dumond she’s managed to get noticed in a big way as she’s taken on the responsibility of helping to move the story forward and be someone that’s important to the main cast and the direction of the movie. That’s not a small thing when you really look at it since she’s been in there with some of the best that Hollywood has to offer and she’s stuck it out in a way that has been nothing short of inspiring since working alongside the likes of Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, and Joaquin Phoenix is enough to intimidate some people, but Zazie has kept things going in an even and very professional manner that has seen her gain a great deal of attention.
When you look at just these two roles there’s not a lot to go on as far as her career but there is a lot to say about each of them, so I think that’s where I’ll go from here. Starting out with Domino is pretty easy since to comic fans she’s the most well-known and has been around for a longer time than Sophie considering that she was introduced in the early 90s and wasn’t exactly an instant hit but was still someone new enough and exciting enough that she was able to stick with the fans and remain in place for a long time to come. Her first affiliation in the comics was with Cable so it’s kind of a switch to see her team up with Deadpool, but that seems to be how comic movies go these days, cherry-picking what they want and putting it all back together in one cohesive unit. Seeing as how it worked for Deadpool 2 however and for the original movie there’s not a lot of complaints at this time. But Domino’s power, that ‘good luck’ that Deadpool seems to disdain so much, is more than just her ability to be in the right place at the right time. The power actually comes in the form of subconscious, telekinetic pulses that manage to change the probability of Domino’s surroundings so that things tend to go her way. When it comes to affecting her opponents it could come in the form of a weapons malfunction, a slip, trip, or sudden stumble, or just anything that makes it nearly impossible for them to really harm or affect her in a big way. When it comes to affecting her and the movements she makes it’s almost like a Marvel version of the Force as she reacts on instinct and, most of the time, is able to stay out of harms way.
Sophie Dumond is not a super-powered individual and is in fact just a regular person in Joker, but unfortunately she’s subjected to the madness of Arthur Fleck as he has the idea that, for some reason, the two of them are connected and that it’s okay for him to be in her apartment whenever he feels like it. This fantasy that the two of them are together is fairly obvious since Arthur is completely into the act while Sophie looks nervous and quite intimidated for much of the time. It’s a big switch from playing the confident and cocky character of Domino, but it’s still an important part despite the fact that she’s a supporting character and doesn’t have as prominent of a role in Joker. In a way she’s the grounding point for Arthur, or one of them at least, and it’s not enough at some point since he continues to slip into the depths of his own madness as the movie wears on. Zazie has come out in a big way to show that she has the skills and the ability to hang with some of the biggest names in the business and it’s uplifting since it means that she’s another face on the scene that people are likely going to expect big things from. The idea that she’s someone that can deliver is even better since it grants a lot of people a bit of hope to see that as the old stars continue to age that the next generations are already on the scene and doing just fine. The torch hasn’t been passed quite yet but thankfully when it does happen there will be plenty of people like Zazie that are able to take over.
