American actress Dakota Fanning leads The Watchers cast in Ishana Night Shyamalan’s directorial debut. Although not a stranger to the genre, The Watchers is Fanning’s first horror movie as an adult. The Watchers is based on a fiction novel by the same name, written by A. M. Shine.
The movie is one of the most anticipated horror films of the year, especially because of the director behind it. Ishana Night Shyamalan is the daughter of renowned horror filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan. Like her father, Ishana’s directorial debut uses only a few casts. These are the top The Watchers cast and where you know them.
Dakota Fanning as Mina
Cast as Mina, Dakota Fanning plays the protagonist, Mina, an artist. While driving to deliver a parrot, Mina’s car mysteriously breaks down at the edge of a massive forest. As she searches for help, she is left stranded in a dark woodland. Things get terrifying when she hears terrifying shrieking sounds that seem to be chasing her. Luckily, a woman opens the door to what seems like a shack (Coop) just in time to let Mina in.
However, Mina soon realizes she’s far from safety as she and the three other people living in the coop are nightly entertainment for these mysterious creatures known as The Watchers. Dakota Fanning began her career at age 5 and has been consistent through the years. With a career spanning 25 years, Fanning is known for her roles in I Am Sam (2001), Uptown Girls (2003), Man on Fire (2004), War of the Worlds (2005), Charlotte’s Web (2006), The Twilight Saga movies, and more recently The Equalizer 3 (2023).
Georgina Campbell as Ciara
British actress Georgina Campbell also joins The Watchers cast, playing Ciara. Her character is a young widow, and she is one of two women Mina meets inside the coop in the forest. Although she has obeyed the prevailing rules all the time she has been there, she’s willing to take the risk with Mina to secure their escape. Georgina Campbell has had a growing list of credits since she made her acting debut in 2009. Campbell is known for her roles in Murdered by My Boyfriend (2014), Krypton (2018), Barbarian (2022), and Bird Box Barcelona (2023).
Olwen Fouéré as Madeline
Although a supporting character, Olwen Fouéré’s Madeline character shines throughout the movie. As Mine runs away from the shrieking voices, Madeline opens the Coop door to let her in. She isn’t just the oldest among the four humans held hostage in the coop; she has been held captive the longest, having spent years entertaining the Watchers. Madeline instructs the others about what the Watchers want and does her best to ensure they stay compliant to survive. Irish actress Olwen Fouéré delivers a stellar performance as Madeline. With the movie’s source material based on Irish folklore, Fouéré casting is unsurprising. Olwen Fouéré is known for her roles in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018), Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022), The Northman (2022), Halo (2024), and Tarot (2024).
Oliver Finnegan as Daniel
Joining as the last of the four main casts is Oliver Finnegan, who plays Daniel. He’s the only male character in the coop. Like the other, he was led into the coop and has been forced to “perform” for the Watcher ever since. He’s the youngest and most naive of all of them. Oliver Finnegan also has the least acting experience among the other actors. Finnegan’s career began in 2017, appearing in an episode of Man in an Orange Shirt as Wykeham. Since then, he has only landed guest roles in television. He was in Outlander in 2018 and in an episode of We Are Lady Parts in 2018. According to her IMDb page, Ishana Night Shyamalan’s The Watchers is Oliver Finnegan’s film debut.
The Watchers also star other minor and supporting cast members. English actor Alistair Brammer (from Les Misérables and Casualty) plays John. Irish actor and filmmaker Siobhan Hewlett plays Mina’s mother. Northern Irish actor and writer John Lynch also joins The Watchers cast as Kilmartin. Other cast members include Hannah Dargan (as young Mina), Emily Dargan (as young Lucy), Joel Figueroa (as Darwin), Anthony Morris (as Burke), and Shane O’Regan (as Collin).
