There’s already a plan in motion to make a Space Jam 2 with LeBron James no less. But should it be made? It seems that this has been in the works for some time now and is even now getting a rewrite, but honestly it seems like it should be left on the back burner until it gets forgotten again. Why? Well that’s simple, the first one was simply too good to come in and start up with another, especially since whether anyone admits it or not, this next movie will be trying to one-up the original in a lot of ways by adding in more sports stars and possibly another comedian or two in the mix to make it seem that much more impressive. But in truth it should probably be left alone and allowed to rest.
Some classics don’t need the follow-ups they get later on since they establish the bar when they hit the theaters and as a result are seen as some of the best movies in cinematic history, and for good reason. Space Jam was another movie that was able to pioneer the mix between live action and animation in a way that made a great deal of sense and was highly entertaining. Since it was released the animation and special effects have only gotten better throughout the years, but this doesn’t mean much since the story in this movie was goofy, but it was sensible enough that it was accepted by the audience. If you listen to Matt Moore from CBS Sports you might find your eyes widening as he states that LeBron shouldn’t think about doing this movie, but also goes into why Looney Tunes aren’t relevant and why the movie Space Jam was worth much less than people seem to think. You can argue with Moore if you like but quite honestly the movie was great for the time and it was just funny enough to entertain the audiences that came to see it.
Plus, and this is getting right to the heart of the matter, there’s not a lot of opportunity for a sequel to do as well since the whole idea is that the first movie had a clear beginning, middle, and end. Even if the aliens that came to capture the Looney Tunes decided to stay and their boss was sent back to Moron Mountain there’s not a lot of room for a sequel other than a revenge story, and that’s shaky at best. Even Patrick Patterson of the Oklahoma City Thunder has been pleading with Hollywood to give up any plans of making the sequel, and that’s saying something when an NBA star thinks that a film that would seek to glorify his sport doesn’t want to see it. Some might say that LeBron is trying to prove himself on the big screen, since like it or not he hasn’t really done such a thing yet, but others might argue that he’s reached that pinnacle and is now trying to cement a different part of his legacy that will see him as a man that has talent in more than one venue. If you laughed at that don’t feel too bad, you’re not the only one.
Some movies just don’t need sequels no matter how badly some feel that it needs to happen, as they hit the mark the first time and don’t need to be revisited until much, much later when the memory of the first movie has just about faded. In this instance a lot of people still remember Space Jam and they recall just how great it was to see the legends such as Jordan, Bogues, Barkley, Ewing, Johnson, Bradley taking to the court and flexing their acting muscles a bit. But bringing back a new cast of athletes that either can’t act or will simply try too hard is something that a lot of people are willing to at least take a chance on simply because they’re fans, but don’t seem to realize will be just as stiff and uncomfortable as it as in the original movie. We forgave Space Jam a lot of things when it came out since the novelty of the movie was just too great to pass up, and there was enough hilarity and feeling within the movie to really enjoy it without having to think too much.
As Casey Mink of Hollywood Life has shown a lot of people have chimed in either for or against this movie and have allowed themselves to simply vent their feelings on the matter. So far the movie has a 2021 release date, but if we’re lucky we won’t be seeing it emerge anytime soon as it might need rewrites and a new cast and so on and so forth. This is one that development hell might need to claim in a very aggressive manner.
