Only a couple of days removed from the Oscars and we’re already hearing Oscars talk for next year. Director J.J. Abrams was extremely impressed with Mark Hamill’s work as Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi that he’s already hinting that Hamill deserves an Oscar. While talking to NY Daily News at the Oscar Wilde Awards in L.A., the filmmaker said:
“I think we are all going to be very upset if he does not win an Oscar, and no one more upset than Mark.”
To be honest it’s hard to tell if Abrams was being serious here because that would be a dig on Hamill. Something tells me that Hamill wouldn’t be upset if he didn’t win an Oscar. What would be hilarious is if Abrams said that Hamill deserved an Oscar for The Force Awakens. You know, because that look he gave Rey was pretty awesome.
But in all seriousness one good thing about this quote is that it seems as though Hamill has a much larger role in The Last Jedi. If you read between the lines it looks like this is Hamill and Luke’s film. While The Force Awakens belonged to Han Solo, The Last Jedi could be Skywalker’s. Let’s just hope he doesn’t suffer the same faith as Solo did.
