Netflix’s 3 Body Problem is a sci-fi series about a group of scientists who work to prevent an alien invasion from the San-Ti aliens, who will take nearly 400 years to get to Earth. Although they are friendly at first, the San-Ti soon realizes that humans are liars and not to be trusted. The realization of humanity’s true nature leads them to decide they are bugs and need to be conquered. This Netflix hit series adapts Chinese author Liu Cixin’s first book, The Three-Body Problem.
The eight episodes of this first season cost Netflix $160 million, so it’s not surprising that the streaming giant is taking the wait-and-see approach before announcing Season 2. Several TV shows start picking up after the first season, and 3 Body Problem has the potential to do just that. With Netflix struggling to create long-lasting sci-fi TV series after Stranger Things, 3 Body Problem could be the next big hit on their hands!
The 3 Body Problem Reviews
The numbers are out, and 3 Body Problem didn’t make it to the top number one spot as expected with the massive budget backing from Netflix. However, it was one of the most-watched TV series, peaking at number two during its debut. According to WhatsonNetflix, the series clocked over 81 million hours watched and started several discussions on the possibility of an alien invasion on the internet. While the numbers weren’t as great as Netflix could have hoped, the series is a definite hit among sci-fi lovers.
3 Body Problem found a large audience in the Chinese market on the first day of its release, but it wasn’t well received by nationalists who felt it was hollow and fell flat, prompting more debate on social media. But not all controversy is bad for the series. With the show being made for the screen by the Game of Thrones creators, they aren’t strangers to a little backlash about their creative choices in adaptations. So another season could be the perfect opportunity to make some much-needed changes to the characters, plot choices, and the oversimplification of the narrative to fit the American audience.
The Plot of 3 Body Problem Is Already Clear
A TV adaptation based on books is the best recipe because there is a path that showrunners can follow in telling the story. Whether they will deviate from that story isn’t the primary issue because the end will more or less be the same. It makes the writer’s work simpler in some instances, but it is also problematic if they want to make significant changes that will anger the book’s fans. There are three novels in the series, and according to creators DB Weiss, Alexander Woo, and David Benioff, it would be great if they could adapt all three stories to tell the story the way it should be. During an interview with RadioTimes, Woo said that while they are hoping to get a second season, he also hopes they will at least get three seasons, possibly more because the third book is too long to be adapted in one season with less than ten episodes.
Although the second season is yet to be confirmed, Weiss revealed during an interview with Collider that they already have more than a rough idea for the plot. 3 Body Problem Season 2 will likely adapt the second book in the series, The Dark Forest. Benioff told Collider that the third season, which would adapt the third book, Death’s End, would need more than one season because of how massive it was compared to the other books. With a plot in sight, it’s easy to create a path for Netflix decision-makers to green-light more seasons of this sci-fi epic series quickly.
3 Body Problem Is the Best Series to Fill a Noticeable Gap at Netflix
For a long time, Sci-fi lovers have struggled to get a second season of their favorite shows on Netflix due to the streaming platform’s reputation for canceling shows just when they start getting good. Shows that were canceled too soon include Cursed, Jupiter’s Legacy, The Irregulars, The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself, and 1899. And with Stranger Things coming to a close with the fifth season, Netflix needs an excellent show to fill the gap and bring back viewers.
While Netflix has excelled in creating some fantastic shows, in the last five years, this streaming giant hasn’t been the go-to platform to watch interesting sci-fi shows. With Apple TV’s successful foray into sci-fi with series like Foundation, Inclusion, For All Mankind, and Silo, Netflix seems to be trying to catch up. Apple is now known as the best platform for watching original shows in the sci-fi genre. So, if Netflix wants to leave a mark, the 3 Body Problem could be the best show to replace Stranger Things.
