It’s very easy to agree with Gem Seddon from Games Radar that some movies from the 90s could use a big-time remake. Sometimes it could be that the movie was that great but was hindered by the issue that the technology hadn’t caught up yet, or it could be that the movie was kind of horrible but had a great story behind it that needed to be told. In any case it seems as though some movies should get another chance, especially in the horror genre, since at this point and time horror seems like it needs another shot in the arm to really push forward. The horror movies of the current era aren’t all horrible, but there was something edgy about the 90s that had a ‘take no prisoners’ kind of feel that made it a little more special and a lot scarier since it had some of the cheesy side of the 80s despite the fact that many of the 90s horror flicks relied on a healthy mix of gore and suspense that kept the audience guessing and wondering just when the next big freakout was going to come. Eventually they got predictable as many horror movies do, but all in all the 90s do deserve a good look in order to see which movies can be brought back.
5. The People Under the Stairs
If you want to talk about a disturbing movie then this would be one of those that might affect you the most since it has to do with the idea of keeping children locked up in a cellar when they disobey the rules. Worse yet, the children have resorted to cannibalism in order to survive. On top of that, Mommy and Daddy are just flat out psychopaths that are willing to do anything and everything to keep their little secret, and that does mean ‘anything’. This might actually raise a few eyebrows with people considering the whole issue with children being involved but it does seem like it would be a welcomed remake. As Noel Murray from AV/Film has said it’s timeless, and quite honestly that statement seems more than accurate.
4. Sometimes They Come Back
This film deserves a remake for certain since it’s essentially a ghost/revenge story, the kind the Stephen King excels at. The sequel needs to be left alone since Bad Movie Reviewer is absolutely correct in assuming that the sequel is walking, talking dumpster fire. The original however is something that suffered the same fate as a lot of King’s stories back in the day, the director didn’t let the story have its way and therefore ruined the whole thing. There’s no point to a scary movie when you don’t let the fear just roll on and go ape with the effects, as much as was possible in that time period.
3. The Faculty
This was one of those 90s movies that was all about rebellion and what it took to find yourself and blah, blah, blah, yadda yadda. It was also a cool alien movie that got so bogged down by the drama and teenage angst that was pushed on us that the whole invasion aspect just became kind of silly. The queen alien in this movie seems like something that might have given a xenomorph queen a run for its money and it was reduced to a comical and very ridiculous caricature that no doubt started off as something insanely scary and intimidating. Sometimes the need for the teenage rebellion needs to take a back seat to the whole alien invasion. It’s less important to focus on a relationship when something is trying to kill you or enslave you.
2. Dr. Giggles
It seems like a safe assumption that many people don’t even remember Dr. Giggles since in the 90s this was over the top in a way that a lot of people felt was simply too much and too ridiculous to even conceive of. After all the doctor, while still a kid, avoided capture by apparently hiding in his mother’s dead corpse and then cutting his way out. Of course then he was taken to a mental hospital soon after and only got crazier as time went on. There’s potential in this story, but it needs a firm hand and someone that’s not going to let it jump off the rails so often. it could be something terrifying if it was given to the right person to develop.
1. In the Mouth of Madness
Writers and screenwriters alike should agree that this is something that would appeal to them in a way since one of the supporting characters is in fact a writer whose creations have taken over an entire town. It’s only later that you learn that the creations that are his are only reflections of a deeper, darker source that’s been feeding him and inspiring each of his novels for so long that he’s finally become a part of the story, much as everyone does at some point. This is easily terrifying enough to be remade and in a manner that could scare the living hell out of a lot of people.
Sometimes becoming the story is the scariest part after all.
