Downton Abbey: A New Era, the second movie to the Downton Abbey movies based on the Downton Abbey TV series, premiered earlier this year to critical acclaim from fans of the original drama. The movie was directed by Simon Curtis, who had previously worked on films like Cranford and David Copperfield. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie’s plot is as follows: “The much-anticipated cinematic return of the global phenomenon reunites the beloved cast as they go on a grand journey to the South of France to uncover the mystery of the Dowager Countess’ newly inherited villa.”
A critique from Screen Hub wrote about the film: “The storytelling remains seductive, but the characters are noticeably older. They seem sleeker and more complacent, too … But maybe we’ve had enough upheaval in the past three years that this elegant fantasy past has become even more narcotic.” As the review points out, the movie does see the return of its old cast members, but alongside them are fresh faces that made the second Downton Abbey film twice more alluring. Laura Haddock
Laura Haddock plays Myrna Dalgleish, an insecure movie star, in Downton Abbey: A New Era.
