Black Manta Is the Villain in James Wan & Jason Momoa’s ‘Aquaman’

Black Manta

The Wrap is on a hot streak this week.

After breaking the news yesterday about Warner Bros. entering active development on a sequel to 2013’s Man of Steel, it’s being reported that the villain in 2018’s Aquaman solo-film will be Black Manta. In the comics, Black Manta is Aquaman’s most dangerous enemy, and his appearances since DC’s New 52 reboot a few years back have established him as a man with no superpowers that can still be ruthless and deadly. Also in the comics, the character spent some time in Belle Reve prison, which led to speculation (obviously proven false) that Common would be playing the villain in Suicide Squad. There’s no word on who will be playing Black Manta in the film.

Aquaman will be the first solo appearance for the title character, and he’ll be brought to life by Jason Momoa. In next year’s Justice League, fellow Atlanteans Mera and Vulko will be portrayed by Amber Heard and Willem Defoe, respectively. James Wan is directing the film from a screenplay by Will Beal, which is itself based off a story treatment by Geoff Johns and James Wan.

Aquaman opens in theaters in 2018. Are you looking forward to seeing Black Manta face off against the hero? Let us know in the comments down below!
