Martha
This companion began as a medical student, joining the Tenth Doctor after an incident at her work (a hospital). She served as his companion for about a year before leaving him as their relationship grew too unhealthy. She is also featured on Torchwood. Martha always harbored some affection for the Doctor. However, she feels that she is a sort of rebound for him after he lost Rose. This is what ended up leading to her leaving the doctor. She didn’t want to pine after a man who would never see her as a potential relationship. This character was the first minority featured on the show, and was notable for being university-educated, middle-class, and a solid role model for young women — qualities that secure her this spot on the list of the best companions.
