The 20 Greatest Doctor Who Companions of All Time

Named after Palestinian hijacker Leila Khaled, Leela was the companion to the Fourth Doctor during the original run of Doctor Who. She was originally picked up on an unnamed planet, where she lived in a tribal manner. She may have been primitive, but she was also highly intelligent. She was able to grasp advanced concepts quite easily. However, she often stuck with her tribal ways, despite the Doctor’s attempts at civilizing her. Leela was with the Fourth Doctor for 40 episodes. In her final episode, she met Andred — a native from the Doctor’s home planet Gallifrey — and decided to stay behind and marry him. Though this was her last appearance on the screen, her story ended well. The Doctor was told that she was “well and very happy” when he inquired of her in Arc of Infinity.
