FINALLY!
The truth about the body on the beach has been revealed!! The Fire and Ice ball on Revenge has come and gone and luckily our prayers were answered. They were OUR prayers right? Wait, were we the only ones praying? We are highly invested in this show.
Now you know that our dear Daniel Grayson, “Prince of the Manor,” is still alive and well, while “under-medicated” Tyler Barrol (guest star Ashton Holmes) is lying dead on the beach.
You have to hand it to Mike Kelley and the writers of Revenge as they consistently take us on an exhilarating ride every week. Tonight was no exception as director Sanford Bookstaver helped craft a carefully shot and beautiful tale of “Chaos.” When we saw a bloody and battered Daniel falling to the ground in the beginning of the episode, we thought for sure he was a goner, but then at the end it was revealed that Tyler was actually the one who was murdered. (Editor’s note: YAY!)
But let’s rewind and start at the beginning of tonight’s fantastic episode of Revenge, shall we?
Within minutes of the momentous episode, we learned that Tyler was back and not only stole Emily’s infinity box, but also kidnapped Amanda (Margarita Levieva) in a scheme to get back at Ms. Thorne and the Graysons and frame Emily (Emily VanCamp) for Daniel’s planned demise. Tyler also managed to get Amanda on his side by divulging information regarding the truth about the fire at Treadwell’s and letting her rummage through Emily’s box of secrets. It’s unclear whether she remained on his side throughout the entirety of the episode, but in one riveting moment she pulls a gun on her “sister” as they met up to exchange the goods of the box for a hefty ransom check and our jaws hit the floor.
Tyler and Amanda weren’t the only familiar faces who resurfaced during tonight’s episode. Emily’s former sensei, Satoshi Takeda (guest star Hiroyuki Sanada), was also back in the fold. At Grandpa Grayson’s insistence, Daniel took a meeting, or, more accurately, rejected a meeting with him regarding his account at Grayson Global. Takeda also attempted to help guide Emily on her quest and take care of the precarious situation she now found herself in.
As a character with a seemingly better moral code than most on Revenge, Daniel decided he wanted nothing more to do with his family and would surprise his lady love with a indefinite trip to Paris to escape the secrets and lies which have threatened to destroy them. As seen in the sneak peeks of the episode, Victoria (Madeleine Stowe) is sure that Emily won’t go for this plan and, just like that, doubts regarding Emily’s true motives for marrying Daniel were planted in his head.
During an interview after Monday night’s special press screening of Revenge, Joshua Bowman, who plays Daniel, agreed that the stress put on his relationship with Emily will only increase after the events of this Labor Day Weekend. Particularly since Tyler happened to show Daniel a certain company photo full of red sharpie ‘X’s prior to his death. “That sparked something in Daniel. He’ll definitely start snooping and become more aware, I’m sure.” Though his character’s suspicions are high, Bowman thinks, “that he gives [Emily] the benefit of the doubt because he loves her so much and he’s never felt this before […] but now I think after all that’s happened and what you’re seeing and what’s going on … he’s going to ask questions.”
Though Daniel attempted to defy Grandpa Grayson (William Devane) by leaving his meeting with Takeda, the patriarch of the family got his way when Victoria and Conrad (Henry Czerney) mad their divorce official and settled out of the public eye. Grandpa Grayson also cornered Charlotte during the episode when she decided to make an appointment with a therapist Declan found for her. After all, if that information were to get out, what would happen to the good Grayson name? Maybe this helped aide her decision to self medicate with Jack’s oxycodone.
After learning of Emily’s deception and escaping from Tyler, Amanda realized that the only thing that has made her truly happy was her short relationship with Jack (Nick Wechsler). Just as he was about to leave for Port-a-Prince on his boat, she showed up at the docks, wanting to go with him. Conversation ensued and just after they embraced, Amanda told him she loves him and then fled in a cab. As Jack looked down at his hand, we saw blood and off he went to chase her. We later saw Jack’s selfless act, which was teased in our preview, as he told Amanda to run and he dragged Tyler’s dead body up onto the beach. She headed towards his car in an effort to escape and ended up getting picked up by Takeda. Did she kill Tyler to protect Emily? Where is Takeda taking her? It’s all so unclear at this point.
Wechsler was reluctant and/or unable to tell us when we or his character would see Amanda again, but I would say chances are good that we will see her before the season’s end. When asked whether or not he’d like his character to learn the truth about Emily and Amanda this season, he was impartial, mentioning that while it would be fun to play, if it worked better for the story to hold that information until season 2 (that is if they get picked up of course…which, seriously, ABC would be insane not to do) then that would be fine as well.
So what did he think when he found out who was dead on the beach?
“I learned a long time ago. For me, the exciting thing was seeing how they got us to that and how they hit it. Because I knew some of things we were going to do before we did them, before the audience did – I was convinced the audience was going to see through it and they’ll be able to predict everything.”
Lucky for him, and for the creators of the show, they had us guessing until the very end. Now the big mystery can turn to who actually killed Tyler. Was it Daniel? Amanda? Emily? Jack? And will the person put on trial for the remainder of the season be the real murderer or was he/she just framed for the crime? It looks like we’ll find out in the next new episode of Revenge airing on February 29th.
Bowman let us know that we’ll see what exactly happened on the beach in episode 16, appropriately entitled ‘Scandal’, and that “it’s going to get a whole lot of crazy and it’s going to be pretty interesting. There’s a lot of people who are going to be on the docks.” Having just read episode 18 prior to Monday night’s screening, he described that specific episode as “mental”, only teasing us that there are a lot of good things happening in the back 7 episodes.
Bowman is also hoping that he’ll be able to show Daniel’s dark side soon on Revenge. “You’ll definitely see a little bit before we end the season. He’s got a vicious side to him, which I can’t wait to show.” While his character doesn’t have anything to hide at the moment, it really is only a matter of time. After all, he is a Grayson and, as Bowman mentioned repeatedly during our conversation, “the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree.”
We have so many thoughts and questions flying through our heads after “Chaos” that it’s hard to think straight! So now that YOU know who died on the beach, who do you think killed Tyler? Do you think the murderer will be brought to justice? How about Amanda…will she be back? And what is Takeda’s plan with her? Will Jack go looking for her? Will Nolan let Jack in on Emily’s plans? How will the events of the Fire and Ice ball change the plan?
Unfortunately Revenge isn’t new until February 29th but that gives us a whole extra week to speculate and we can’t wait to discuss it with you! When you’re done processing, let us know everything you’re thinking in the comments below!
