You, Me & My Ex first aired in 2021 on TLC. Like any reality TV series, it was met with mixed reviews. Due to the wooden nature of some of cast members, many hypothesised that the content was staged and the subjects were actually actors. However, this is purely speculation.
As far as reality TV series go, You, Me & My Ex did serve up a unique concept that hadn’t really been seen before. To that, it acted as both a fresh and exciting new show, but also caused some controversies. So, let’s explore that and tell you everything you need to know about TLC’s daring series.
What is the Premise of You, Me & My Ex?
In the TLC series You, Me & My Ex, cameras follow five unique couples who have taken the unconventional route of dating and building a life with their partner while still maintaining a connection with their ex. This show offers a refreshing and unfiltered look into the benefits and challenges that come with having an ex as a constant presence in your relationship. From co-parenting to shared social media accounts, each couple navigates the complexities of being part of a non-traditional family unit.
With relationships, marriage, and even children being redefined, these couples are breaking the mold and finding new ways to make it work. Whether it’s sharing a home, raising children together, or simply staying friends, You, Me & My Ex takes viewers on a journey to explore the real-life consequences and rewards of blurring the lines between past and present love. After the show first aired in 2021, many became skeptical if it was scripted or actually real. It’s no secret that many reality shows tinker with the storylines and add in fictional elements for dramatic effect. What’s more, TLC have been known to do this in the past. And this is where You, Me & My Ex fell under scrutiny, as a great deal of the show felt a little too dramatic to be real.
How Many Seasons Has There Been?
So far, You, Me & My Ex has ran for two seasons. After the success of the first season (which became one of TLC’s most watched shows), a second followed in 2023. After proving popular, the second season was upped from 9 episodes to 12. With these extras episodes, came extra drama and a whole new host of couples and exes. Furthermore, fan favourite couples came back for the second season to offer updates on where they were. The concept was the same – exploring how a relationship can work when an ex is heavily involved. TLC’s official synopsis for the second season was: “Discover how close is too close when it comes to staying friends with an ex. Relationships, marriage and children are no longer one-size-fits-all as the people in these relationships redefine the norm, break the rules and forge new ways to be a family.”
Will There Be Another Season?
As of the time of writing, You, Me & My Ex hasn’t yet been renewed for a third season. However, many of the stars of the show have maintained huge levels of popularity on social media. Elodie Vincent in particular has built quite the following on Instagram and reportedly makes a substantial amount of money greeting her fans via Cameo, a solid indication that she is staying relevant. Since the show last aired, her Instagram has climbed to nearly 30,000 followers, with many asking for a third season. However, not everyone has been so enthusiastic about the show.
Many TV goers took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice their detest for the show. One user wrote: “I think I draw the line with the new TLC show “You, me and my ex”…. that’s just entering a new level of weird.” Another posted: “Is it a rule on TLC to give a TV show to just anyone with a pulse?” And another tagged TLC, writing: “Hey @TLC are y’all out of show ideas? You, me, and my ex?”
