While Tron:Legacy had mixed reviews in the theaters that doesn’t mean that fans haven’t been thinking about a Tron 3 ever since 2010, when Legacy came out. Unfortunately there have been zero signs of a third movie and then out of nowhere at a special IMAX screening exclusive to Collider, Tron:Legacy director Joseph Kosinski was part of a Q&A that confirmed a third movie will be made and that it will be called Tron: Ascension.
This movie’s called Tron: Ascension, and I think we got the script to… about 80 %. We were in good shape, we were probably 8 or 9 months out, which is still a long distance from being ready to shoot it. What I’m excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine. … The idea for Ascension was the first act was in the real world, the second act was in the world of Tron, the multiple worlds of Tron, and the third act is totally in the real world. I think that really opens up, blows open the concept of Tron in a way that would be thrilling to see on screen. But also, there’s a real kind of interesting character study in Quorra, a stranger in a strange land trying to where she belongs, having lived in the real world for a few years, and where does she fit in?
Technically speaking from a budget perspective Tron:Ascension is at the bottom of the movie pile with regard to the movie studios. Other projects are a priority right now. However Kasinski says the script is solid. We can also expect way more out of Olivia Wild and Cilian Murphy’s characters Quorra and Ed Dillinger Jr. Right now this seems like an “in development” story but for those holding out hope for a third Tron, this sounds pretty real.
