If there’s one thing audiences love watching more than most in movies, it’s the villain getting their just rewards. That’s why most blockbusters promise and deliver that exact outcome. It’s difficult to argue with that ideology, given that real life doesn’t necessarily work that way. Movies are the perfect outlet for people to experience that satisfying “good triumphs over evil” emotion that doesn’t always play out in the real world.
Sometimes, however, Hollywood has gone the other way. There have been movies where the villain wins so comprehensively that there was little anyone could have done to stop it from happening. These are the top 5 films where viewers stared in disbelief as the villains walked away scot-free.
5. Avengers: Infinity War (2018) — Thanos Snaps His Fingers and Goes Farming
Who can forget that look of pure elation and victory on Thor’s face when he buried his axe in Thanos’ chest? For just a fleeting second, after more than two hours of chaos-filled hunt for the Infinity Stones, everyone thought the Avengers had finally stopped Thanos from achieving his aim of erasing half of all human life from the universe. Then Thanos looks down at the blade, looks up at Thor, and whispers: “You should have gone for the head.” Snap, and half the universe turns to dust. That includes some of the beloved Avengers, like Peter Parker/Spider-Man, who grabs Tony Stark/Iron Man and keeps saying, “I don’t feel so good,” until he… stops.
Before Infinity War, the Avengers had always found a way to come out on top. So watching them fail that completely was genuinely brutal, to say the least. The only thing that mitigated that feeling was the knowledge that Endgame was on the way. Explains why this entry is number five on this list.
4. Gone Girl (2014) — Amy Dunne Gets Away With Murder, Literally
This movie didn’t make audiences angry so much as grossed out. Rosamund Pike’s Amy Dunne didn’t just fake her own murder, frame her husband for it, and then watch from a safe distance while his entire life burned. She also commits an actual murder before waltzing back home like a victim of a heinous crime. What’s even worse is that she gets away with the whole thing. Her husband Nick (Ben Affleck) knows she orchestrated the whole thing, and by the end, the audience knows too.
Yet, the police shake her hand and send her home. The part that makes the skin crawl is the night of the return, where Nick finally confronts her as the couple argues in the kitchen and the living room, and she just replies, coldly: “I’m the cunt you married.” Then, when he all but admits he’s scared of her and wants to leave, Amy just looks straight at him before quipping: “That’s marriage,” a two-word reply that has become one of the most unhinged movie quotes in modern history.
3. Saltburn (2023) — Oliver Quick Wanted the Estate, He Got the Estate
In real life, Oliver Quick’s (Barry Keoghan) plan would likely fail because British estates like the one in this film (Drayton House) are almost impossible for outsiders to inherit legally. In this film, though, he doesn’t just inherit; he does it on the blood and bones of the legal heirs, all without consequences. Every awkward dinner, every fake cry, every carefully manufactured moment of vulnerability in Saltburn was a move Oliver cooked up. His goal? Get the entire Catton family out of the way, and claim their inheritance for himself.
After he achieved his goal, he proceeded to dance naked through their ancestral home, to Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder on the Dance Floor” no less. Honestly, the audacity and the unhinged, joyful glee make it genuinely hard to look away, which is kind of the problem. That dance scene gives the whole thing a campy, celebratory energy that accidentally reduces the impact of the horror viewers saw throughout the movie. Oliver wins completely, but Saltburn practically throws him a party for it.
2. The Wailing (2016) — The Demon Wins By Making a Father Doubt Everything
The Wailing ends with a daughter killing her entire family because a demon makes a father doubt everything and everyone he ever trusted. Just one wrong call when everything is on the line, and that’s it. The film ends with no explanation, no resolution, and no moment where the logic clicks. Just a man who loved his kid and got played for it. The Wailing is brutal specifically because it doesn’t feel like a horror movie pulling a twist. It feels like watching something terrible happen to a real person, and there was nothing anyone, especially the audience, could do to stop it.
1. Speak No Evil (2022) — The Scariest Villain on This List Never Throws a Punch
Ultimately, this film is a direct critique of “conflict avoidance” in British and Scandinavian cultures. Psychologists call this “social over-cooperation,” where politeness overrides survival instincts. Speak No Evil (the Danish original, directed by Christian Tafdrup) is about two couples on a vacation that goes wrong in the most mundane way anyone can think of.
It’s hard to watch more than once, mainly because the bad guys here win because their victims somehow forgot to grasp the concept of the word “NO.” Few replies hit home like Patrick’s (Fedja van Huêt) “Because you let me” when Bjørn (Morten Burian) asks why he and his wife Louise (Sidsel Siem Koch) were being murdered. The whole thing is just sickening.
