10 Things You Didn’t Know about The InBetween

The InBetween

The InBetween is a new show that has started up on NBC. Given its name, it should come as no surprise to learn that it is focused on someone with psychic powers that enable them to make contact with the spirits of those who have passed. Here are 10 things that you may or may not have known about The InBetween:

1. The Name Is No Coincidence

The name of the show is no coincidence. In short, there are numerous cultures that believe in two worlds, with one meant for the living and another meant for the dead. When combined with a belief in the ghosts of the dead who haven’t moved on from one world to the next for whatever reason, it is no wonder that numerous cultures have a concept for either an in-between place or an in-between state of being.

2. Supernatural Police Procedural

Genre-wise, The InBetween can be considered a supernatural police procedural of sorts. The supernatural element comes from the fact that its protagonist possesses psychic powers. Meanwhile, the show can be considered a police procedural because it is focused on how its protagonist uses those psychic powers to help the police solve criminal cases.

3. Following In the Footsteps of a Very Long Tradition

Due to this, it can be said that The InBetween is following in the footsteps of a very long tradition. After all, the ghosts of the dead being unable to move on because of some kind of injustice that was done to them is a story that has been told again and again over the course of centuries. As such, it is no wonder that new versions continue to be told in the present time in spite of the changes that have swept over the world.

4. The Protagonist Is Cassie Bedford

For those who are curious, the protagonist of The InBetween is a woman named Cassie Bedford, who becomes involved with the police because of her foster father Det. Tom Hackett. The character is played by the Australian actress Harriet Dyer, who had her first role on the Australian comedy series called Micro Nation in 2012. Generally speaking, Dyer tends to be best-known for her role on the Australian drama Love Child as well as her role on the Australian comedy No Activity, which speaks well of her range in her chosen profession.

5. The Protagonist’s Powers Are Varied In Nature

Cassie’s powers aren’t as simple and straightforward as being able to come into contact with the ghosts of the dead. For instance, she has shown clairvoyance, which is a catch-all term for any kind of ability that enables an individual to gain information about either someone or something without using their physical senses. Moreover, it is interesting to note that Cassie has shown not one but two kinds of clairvoyance, with one being the ability to see into the past and the other being the ability to see into the future.

6. The Protagonist’s Powers Aren’t Perfectly Controllable

There are similar stories in which similar protagonists have their powers under perfect control. However, The InBetween isn’t one of them, as shown by how Cassie’s powers can turn on without her input on the matter. With that said, it seems safe to say that the show won’t be looking too deep into this particular issue because that would ruin the sense of mystery that makes for one of the most entertaining elements of such stories.

7. Some Reviewers Have Called the Protagonist Underwhelming

The inexact nature of Cassie’s powers are very convenient from the perspective of the people who have to come up with the narrative. After all, if they never define the exact details of what she can and cannot do, they can’t be accused of ignoring their own rules for the character. Unfortunately, there are some reviewers who have stated that Cassie is a character with a very tenuous existence beyond her powers, which is a huge problem because her powers are pretty much what the plot demands at any given moment. However, The InBetween has just started up, meaning that there is potential for this to change as the people behind it hit their stride.

8. Some Reviewers Have Praised Harriet Dyer’s Performance

With that said, there are some reviewers that have praised Dyer’s performance, with an excellent example being one who said that there was a “sunniness” to it. With that said, the line was a bit of a backhanded compliment in that it stated the “sunniness” served to lighten up the show in spite of its fondness for cliches as well as its not particularly excellent use of visual unpleasantness.

9. Ghosts Can Impact the Living

It is interesting to note that The InBetween ghosts seem to be capable of impacting the living to some extent. This can be seen in how the ghost of a dead girl named Abigail wanted to hurt her parents’ new baby because of her feelings of jealousy but was convinced to redirect that malice towards the imprisoned grandfather who killed her in the first place. Due to this, one can’t help but wonder whether The InBetween ghosts are capable of helping the living as well, particularly since there is a non-zero chance that this is something that could come up in the future.

10. Filmed in Vancouver, BC

The InBetween is supposed to be set in Seattle, WA. However, some of the viewers will be able to recognize that the scenes aren’t of the actual Seattle but rather a fictional Seattle created using Vancouver, BC over in Canada. It is interesting to note that Vancouver has managed to become a pretty popular for filming, which can be explained by a number of factors. For example, people have been filming in Vancouver so much that the necessary components of a film industry have sprung up, thus making it even easier for interested parties to film there. Likewise, Vancouver is in the same time zone as Los Angeles, meaning that it is relatively convenient as a choice of filming location for LA-based projects.
