Supernatural Review: Episode 7.03 “The Girl Next Door”

Supernatural Review: Episode 7.03 “The Girl Next Door”My first reaction to Dean’s choice to kill Amy was shock. I mean, this is DEAN. One could rightly argue that this show has generally portrayed Dean as the good brother, while Sam is the one with flaws. Over the last six seasons, we’ve seen Sam lie, kill, and be a very bad boy (even if he thought he was doing it for the right reasons). But it is very, very rare when we see this kind of callousness from Dean. So rare, that it’s incredibly jarring.

We know Dean became a torturer in Hell. We saw the cold, unflinching version of Dean in season 4’s ‘On the Head of a Pin’. And Dean himself admitted that he’s nothing but a killer in season 6’s ‘You Can’t Handle the Truth’. But we never really believed that. I mean, Sam is the brother who goes a bit evil, not Dean.

But he did. In many respects, I can understand why Dean chose to kill Amy. Right now, he’s under a tremendous amount of pressure. They’ve lost Bobby’s house, they’ve lost Castiel, and Dean is still worried about how okay Sam really is. In a recent EW article, Gamble explains that Dean’s actions tonight are ‘so influenced by his state of mind coming out of what happened with Cas and what’s been going on with his brother. We see that everything – right down to the hunter’s instincts that he’s been running on for the life of the show – everything has been changed by the loss that he suffered and by losing faith and trust in Castiel and by not knowing if he can trust Sam’. I can understand this. Reasoning with Castiel (at least in the beginning) certainly didn’t help the situation. And what happened? People died. Dean doesn’t seem prepared to let that kind of situation happen again. Believing that people are good doesn’t mean they won’t make the wrong choices. If an angel of God could slip up, why not Amy? This is the place that Dean is coming from now.

Trolling Twitter after the episode, I saw a few fans saying they could understand his choice, but not the fact that he so deliberately lied to Sam. The truth is, I hate secrets between the brothers. Whenever Sam would keep secrets (which was frequently), it always turned out bad. But in this case, there was no way Dean could tell Sam what he was going to do, because his brother would have found a way to stop him. I’m not saying Dean’s actions are justified. But from what I know of this character – and his present circumstances – I can understand why he did what he did. On the other hand, it does, admittedly, seem weird that he wouldn’t also kill the kid, especially since the boy won’t have access to dead people like his mother did. But could we, as an audience, forgive him for stabbing a child? That would have been a step too far, I think.

The Dean fans might be very angry about what happened in this episode. After all, it’s not every day that their righteous Winchester does a bad, bad thing. But this is a very interesting twist, not only for the season, but for the brothers’relationship, which we thought was on solid ground. It will be interesting to see how Dean deals with his actions and how Sam reacts if – and when – he finds out what Dean did to Amy. Will he be willing to forgive his brother as Dean has forgiven him in the past? Or will it change their relationship?

The October 14 episode of Supernatural seems to be all about Dean’s guilt, when he’s targeted by an Egyptian god and put on trial for his life. Will his secret come out so soon? View a promo for the episode here.
