Supergirl Season 2 Episode 20 Review: “City of Lost Children”

Supergirl Season 2 Episode 20 Review: “City of Lost Children”

So here we are; facing down the end of the another season of Supergirl. Next week kicks of the two part finale of what has been an uneven season.”City of Lost Children” took an opportunity to focus on James Olsen while pushing our heroine to the background until the last few minutes. Last week’s episode packed a lot into an hour and ended up being one the best the season had to offer. “Lost Children”? Not the best, but still worth seeing. Read on for more.

Ever since it was revealed that James Olsen would become Guardian in this series, the response has been decidedly mixed. Last night’s episode was attempt in course correction that for the most part succeeded. While in second guessing his duties as Guardian, Olsen tried to locate an alien that attacked National City in a trace like state and ended up finding her son Marcus (This Is Us’ Lonnie Chavis) in the process. Of course, to get anything out of him, Olsen ended up bonding with him. Mechad Brooks did everything he can with the material and it shows. He definitely stepped up his game and turned his best performance of the season.

Teri Hatcher continues to be a great villain and should consider acting in these types of roles more often. If there’s one strong theme about this episode, it’s relationships and the bonds between people. In some ways, Rhea was a better mother to Lena than Lillian ever was and you can really see that come through.

Rhea is there to support Lena through the trials of getting their transporter to work. Of course, when the transporter works, it has an effect on the Phorians, causing them to lose their power and thus presents the reason why Marcus’ mom attacked the city. Unfortunately, Lena also looses that maternal support when Rhea betrays her and uses it to bring Daxamite ships to Earth. For the most part Supergirl keeps their A and B plot lines separate but here, they eventually come together and I think it’s better for that. Kriesberg and Co should really consider doing this more. If anything, this episode was better for pushing Supergirl / Kara to the background and letting Olsen take the spotlight for once. Also, this being Supergirl and all, there are a ton of political undertones and references that come into play. Marcus’ mom and that group of associated Phorians? Could be a reference to immigration. James bonding with Marcus? Black masculinity.

If there were any problems with this episode, it’s the way Olsen is able to sway Marcus’ into gaining control over this powers. The moment was beautiful. However, it was resolved a little too quickly for my taste and doesn’t explain how the other Phorians were able to do so. Also Guardian beating up weed dealers? No. Otherwise, this episode provides the push we need for the last two episodes of the season. Good luck, Kara. All those Daxamite ships? That was chilling.

“Do we scan here at the DEO?”

Ummm, was that a Batman reference?

That last punch Kara delivered to Rhea was awesome.

“Maybe she should give him like some action figures, right? Like if someone had given me action figures when they interrogated me about my dad when I was 10, I would have sung like a canary. I’m just saying.”

That’s a lot of ships. Glad Supes is coming back, because Team DEO are going to need all the help they can get.
