Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Cosmos is Renewed for a Second Season

The exciting announcement has been made that Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Cosmos is returning for a second season with Seth MacFarlane producing again. Cosmos, which is a revival of the 1980s Carl Sagan series, Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, will be coming back to both the National Geographic Channel and Fox. This season will be called Cosmos: Possible Worlds and it will delve into cosmic revolution, serious scientific concepts, and how our space and time coordinates were found.

Neil deGrasse Tyson, an astrophysicist who previously hosted Star Talk, will return as to host the series which is scheduled to premiere in Spring 2019. In 2014, the first season had a wildly successful run, ranking as the most-watched series ever to air on international National Geographic Channels. The show was watched by more than 135 million viewers worldwide. The second season will premiere globally in 43 languages in 171 countries.

The series originated from executive producer, director, and writer Ann Druyan, who is not only Sagan’s widow, but also one of the original writers of the 1980s series as well. Druyan and another writer from the original show, Steven Soter, won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for Nonfiction Programming for the show’s first season in 2014. In addition, Seth MacFarlane, the creator of Family Guy, will also be returning as executive producer. With this winning team, the second season will no doubt be just as interesting and enthralling.

The first season transported the audience to the most intensely hidden recesses and farthest reaches of the universe, dramatizing the lives of those who’s searches for answers contributed to our understanding of where, when, and who we are in the universe. In addition, it featured Tyson riding around in a silver spaceship while spouting mind-blowing scientific facts and using lively animated history lessons to further help us learn. Cosmos: Possible Worlds will take us to territories which were previously uncharted. Whether or not Tyson will be riding around in his silver spaceship again remains to be answered.

The first season got audiences all fired up about discussing science and the universe and all involved are hoping for a return in a similar capacity. Cosmos ended up bagging several awards, including twelve Emmy Awards. Tyson was excited about doing a second season when confirming that they were ”getting the band back together.” If ”the band” wants a repeat of the popularity of the first season, they definitely have their work cut out for them.

In addition to launching the new season, National Geographic Books will also publish a book entitled Cosmos: Possible Worlds which is the long-awaited sequel to Sagan’s bestseller Cosmos: A Personal Voyage.

With a virtually infinite number of worlds to explore and information to learn, Tyson will lead us on another fascinating journey through the universe. With that being said, expect some familiar themes to return as both previous seasons, Sagan’s and Tyson’s, covered the universe from virtually every possible angle, stressed how important scientific processes are, and brought to our attention the influential and often overlooked scientists who’s research made it all possible. Surely this second season of Tyson’s will adhere to those same values.
