For the record I did not watch the show Mama June: From Hot to Not last night. I was too busy not watching shows like this. However, I never thought I’d say that there’s a startling similarity between this show and The Curse of Oak Island. Like The Curse of Oak Island, Mama’s June’s show was a giant tease with no “big reveal” at the end. Fans were shocked and angry that they never actually got to see this tiny, thin Mama June we were expecting from all the promos. Instead fans claimed that she was wearing a fat suit. Even worse, people were tweeting last night that her weight loss won’t be revealed until the end of the season. Really? Viewers are expected to watch God knows how many episodes just to see a woman’s weight loss on the very last episode? I think I’ll pass.
We also found out that Mama’s weight loss was for one reason and one reason only: to exact revenge on her ex, Sugar Bear. Sugar Bear, Mama June, Honey Boo Boo, this is what society is watching? Revenge Body with Khloe Kardashian? I think I’m about to flip my lid. Whatever happened to losing weight to be “healthy?” Now we have revenge weight loss shows? This is the motivation it takes to eat a sensible diet and exercise?
As Will Ferrell says in Zoolander, “I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.” I mean I get shows like The Biggest Loser. These are obese individuals who need to lose weight and their stories are usually genuine and motivational. But losing weight because you’re pissed off? I don’t know. It just rubs me the wrong way. It’s safe to say I’ll never be watching Mama June’s weight loss story but I may certainly chime in about how much I can stand this new and frankly sad genre of television.
