1. She’s From Cuba

Malu isn’t even 18-years-old yet and she has already gotten the chance to live in three countries. She was born in Cuba but moved to Spain at a young age. Her mother is Cuban and her father is from Madrid. When she was 13-years-old, she relocated to Miami. At the time, she didn’t really speak English.

2. She Was Bullied When She Moved To The United States

It’s no secret that teenagers can be very mean. Moving is never easy, but it’s especially difficult when you’re moving to a new country. This is something Malu experienced first hand once she got to the United States. Her classmates bullied her because she looked and sounded different from everyone else.

3. She Always Wanted To Be A Singer

Singing has always been Malu’s dream, but she didn’t always have the confidence to pursue it. Years of dealing with bullying also made her even more reluctant to try to share her voice with the world. However, when she finally decided to put herself out there, the results were overwhelmingly positive.

4. She Was Accused Of Racism

Malu’s rise to the top hasn’t been without controversy. In April during an Instagram Live, Malu was accused of being racist after she referred to the coronavirus as a “Chinese virus”. She then went on to say, “I’m sorry — not trying to be racist or anythin,g but every time I see a Chinese person I go ‘uhhh, don’t breath'” She acknowledged her comments and issued an ‘apology’, but she didn’t seem to be fully aware of the seriousness of her remarks.

5. She Got Her Start On Musical.ly

Most successful artists are famous for their music and social media is just secondary. However, Malu’s career actually began in the reverse order. When she started posting on Musical.ly, she hadn’t even started recording music yet. However, after her singing videos started to gain traction, she was able to land a manager and a record deal.

8. She’s Homeschooled

Malu is still technically a high school student, but she decided to leave the traditional high school scene behind. She told The Netline, “I’m homeschooled because I cannot go to school. There are too many people coming up to me and asking dumb questions. I can’t be a normal teen, to be honest. If I want to sing, then I have to live this life.”

9. She’s A Brand Ambassador

With nearly 8.5 million followers on Instagram, it’s no surprise that brands would want to work with Malu to help market their products or services. She is currently a partner for the popular clothing brand, Fahsion Nova. She often shares photos of herself wearing the company’s clothing and enticing her followers to buy some pieces of their own.
