One of the things that audiences have been most interested in concerning Suicide Squad since the first image dropped is Jared Leto’s portrayal of the Joker, the infamous Clown Prince of Crime that has delighted fans since the very beginning. Luckily, despite the very mixed critical reception so far, it seems as if critics can at least agree that Leto delivers a very fun performance. However, it appears that there are plenty more Joker moments that were filmed but didn’t make it into the movie’s final cut.
Speaking with Telestar, Leto talked about the number of scenes that were definitely filmed, but you won’t be seeing all of them when you check out Suicide Squad in theaters this weekend.
“Oh, there are a lot of scenes, yeah…that didn’t make it into the final film. And, hopefully, they’ll see the light of day…who knows?”
The film’s director, David Ayer, also spoke with Collider about the deleted scenes, but he wants to make sure you know that, despite rumblings that you may hear, the theatrical cut of Suicide Squad is 100% his cut of the movie.
“We have a chunk, there’s definitely over 10 minutes of material on there. But this cut of the movie is my cut, there’s no sort of parallel universe version of the movie, the released movie is my cut. And that’s one of the toughest things about writing, shooting, and directing a film, is you end up with these orphans and you f****** love them and you think they’d be amazing scenes and do these amazing things but the film is a dictatorship, not a democracy, and just because something’s cool and charismatic doesn’t mean it gets to survive in the final cut. The flow of the movie is the highest master.”
Will we end up seeing these deleted scenes on the Blu-ray release in a few months? It’s quite probably, but we don’t know for sure just yet. I hope we do, though, and I wouldn’t really mind an extended cut of the film on home video that reincorporates some of these scenes (as long as it doesn’t take away from Ayer’s vision of the film, that is).
Suicide Squad opens in theaters tomorrow, August 5. Do you want to see these additional scenes? Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below!
