Should We Accept That The Orville Season 4 Is Not Happening?

The Orville is a science fiction television series that has entertained viewers with its eccentric combination of drama and humor. The series created by and starring Seth MacFarlane as Captain Ed Mercer certainly pulled the heartstrings of viewers everywhere, making it one of the most quirky and beloved sci-fi dramedies of all time. The Star Trek-inspired comedy first aired in 2017, and after three successful seasons, the future of The Orville is still up in the air. And the chances of it coming back are looking very thin at this point.

Before the release of The Orville Season 3, the show faced several delays due to the pandemic and television scheduling issues. It was also at the third season mark that The Orville was moved from Fox to Hulu, but the show eventually returned to screens. It’s no wonder viewers are still holding onto hope for the fourth season. The storyline surrounding Captain Ed Mercer and the rest of the USS Orville crew may be on hold for now, but the good news is that The Orville Season 3 finale is left on a cliffhanger that certainly gives room for future storylines. However, there’s still no news on the show’s renewal or cancellation — should we accept that The Orville Season 4 is not happening?

The Longer It Goes, the More Remote a Chance Season 4 Becomes

The Orville Season 4 has been stuck in limbo for a couple of years now, and with no official cancellation or renewal announcement, fans are still holding on to the idea that there might still be a release date in sight. However, not all hope is lost as the creator of the show, MacFarlane has expressed a fifty-fifty chance that there will be more to see from The Orville universe. Despite MacFarlane’s positive statement on the future of the show, it remains at a standstill, making the possibility of a return hard to believe.

On the other hand, other stars of the show have expressed the completely opposite sentiments, with fan-favorite cast member, Adrianne Palicki confirming her departure from The Orville in a podcast. As time goes on, the gap between The Orville Season 3 and Season 4 becomes longer. It’s also been reported that some of the cast’s contracts have expired since the Season 3 finale. With that in mind, it is important to remember that the show isn’t dead just yet, but the chances of renewal are getting slimmer with each passing day.

At This Point ‘The Orville: The Next Generation’ 10 Years From Now Is More of a Possibility Than Another Season

Mark Jackson and Anne Winters in Electric Sheep (2022)

With the overdrawn uncertainty surrounding The Orville Season 4, what could we truly expect from future storylines? If The Orville Season 4 is renewed, it could pick up from where the third season left off with the reconciliation between the USS Orville and their former opposition, the Kaylons. The Orville Season 3 left a lot of room for any future seasons to unfold, especially with the Krill/Moclan alliance in place.

However, at this point, it would be wishful thinking to expect another season with an immediate storyline. This begs the question, will The Orville take a page out of Star Trek’s book by coming up with a new successor like the franchise did with Star Trek: The Next Generation? The Orville: The Next Generation could serve as a continuation of the storyline 10 years down the line, giving room for the possibility of the show’s return more than that of a new season. Or will a streamer save the sinking ship and bring it back? Guess we’ll have to wait and find out!

As Long As Seth MacFarlane Wants To Do It, Another Installment Remains an Eventuality

MacFarlane created The Orville Universe and starred alongside other cast members including Adrianne Palicki, Scott Grimes, Halston Sage, and guest stars like Liam Neeson, and Charlize Theron — just to name a few. The popular actor and animator has described The Orville as a passion project, so it’s safe to say that Macfarlane isn’t letting go of The Orville universe just yet. He has reportedly hinted at the continuation of his passion project, so as long as the assurance remains, there may be a chance that more of The Orville is to come. But when will that be? We don’t know, and we never will. Check out this guide on 8 TV shows like The Orville.
