The Inside Out 2 new cast members and characters are one of the reasons for the anticipation for the nine-year-long sequel. Its 2015 predecessor, Inside Out, was an all-round success, with two Oscar nominations at the 88th Academy Awards and a win for Best Animated Feature. It also ended the year as its seventh-highest-grossing film, with Box Office earnings of $858.8 million against a production budget of $175 million.
Its success led to the inevitable production of a sequel scheduled to premiere on June 14, 2024. Inside Out 2 follows its protagonist, Riley Andersen, as she becomes a teenager. It follows the introduction of new emotions into her mind’s headquarters and what it feels like to be in a teenager’s mind. With new emotions, several new cast members have been added, and a few have been recast. Here are Inside Out 2’s new cast and recast and the characters they play.
Maya Hawke as Anxiety
Leading the new emotion characters is Anxiety, an orange-colored emotion who walks into headquarters with a lot of baggage (pun intended). As a teenager, anxiety is a recurring emotion that’s realistically present in the mind. Unsurprisingly, anxiety quickly usurps power and locks the older emotions away.
American actress and singer-songwriter Maya Hawke joins the Inside Out cast voicing Anxiety. Maya Hawke, daughter of actress Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, is known for her roles as Robin Buckley in Stranger Things, Eleanor Levetan in Do Revenge, and Flannery O’Connor in Wildcat. The Inside Out 2 movie is Hawke’s voice acting debut role in movies.
Ayo Edebiri as Envy
American actress, comedian, and writer Ayo Edebiri also joins the Inside Out 2 cast, voicing the new character envy. Envy is introduced in Riley’s mind as she tries to fit in at school. The emotion has a cyan-colored appearance, wearing a polka-dotted purple sweater. Ayo Edebiri is no stranger to voicing characters, as she has a few projects in movies and TV shows. Edebiri’s most notable voice roles are in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023), where she voiced Glory Grant and April O’Neil, respectively.
Tony Hale as Fear
Audiences from the first movie will recognize the emotion of Fear. Although an already established emotion, it makes the list for having its voice actor recast. Actor, comedian, and filmmaker Bill Hader had earlier voiced the character in the first film. Hader is one of two former voice cast members who refused to reprise their roles. Bill Hader left due to a dispute over pay. Its lead actor, Amy Poehler, was offered $5 million and bonuses, while other returning cast members were reportedly offered $100,000.
With $100,000 being only an estimated two percent of Poehler’s pay, Bill Hader requested a higher pay. Actor and comedian Tony Hale was recast to voice the character of Fear. Hale is mostly known for his roles in Arrested Development and Veep. However, he also has an impressive résumé as a voice actor. Tony Hale has voiced characters in notable productions such as The Angry Birds Movie, Toy Story 4, and Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate.
Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui
Getting easily bored is one major emotion for teenagers, especially at an early age. The indigo-colored boredom emotion (called Ennui) is also introduced in Inside Out 2. French actress Adèle Exarchopoulos is cast as the voice actor behind Ennui. The French actress has worked extensively in the French television and film industry. She played Alex in the Netflix French action comedy Wingwomen.
Paul Walter Hauser as Embarrassment
A great companion of anxiety is embarrassment, which is also introduced as the last new emotion in Riley’s mind. Interestingly, the pink-colored emotion is the biggest of all the emotions in Riley’s head in Inside Out 2. As a teenager who’s naturally now more self-aware, embarrassment takes control occasionally. American actor, musician, and wrestler Paul Walter Hauser joins the cast, voicing the emotion of Embarrassment. Hauser is known for his roles in I, Tonya (2017), BlacKkKlansman (2018), Da 5 Bloods (2020), and Cruella (2021).
Liza Lapira as Disgust
Following a pay dispute, actress and comedian Mindy Kaling also did not reprise her voice role as Disgust. Filipino-American actress Liza Lapira is now voicing the green-colored emotion. Although she has starred in several movies and TV shows, Liza Lapira is more easily recognizable from her most recent project. Lapira plays Melody “Mel” Bayani in the Queen Latifah-led CBS crime drama series The Equalizer.
