Five Things You Didn’t Know About Julian Fellowes

It’s easy to refer to Julian Fellowes as the man behind the hit TV series, Downton Abbey, but there’s more to the man than his shows. He is, however, known for his impressive body of work, which includes credits in acting, writing, producing, and directing. Fellowes has been in the news lately due to the fact that he’s back in the writing game again. According to sources, he’s writing a show for Netflix–his first show since Downton Abbey. Before we get all excited about it, let us tell you about 5 things that you should know about this once-in-a-lifetime talent that is Julian Fellowes.

He was born in Cairo.

Fellowes comes from a rather interesting background. He was born in Egypt because his father was a diplomat and an Arabist. His father had important tie-ins to the Emperor of Ethiopia during the time of World War I. He spent some time in South Kensington before moving to East Sussex, where he would spend majority of his childhood. Their family home there is the place where his parents were eventually buried.

He lived in Los Angeles.

As difficult as it may be to imagine Fellowes living in L.A., he actually did. He moved there in 1981 to pursue television work. He was quite successful in finding acting jobs then, working with small and varied roles in many different shows. He stayed in Los Angeles for 10 years, and he worked for most of those years, gaining the experience and knowledge he would later use in his career. He would go back to England in 1991 and begin to really shape his most prolific career in the industry.

He’s a Baron.

His official title is Baron of West Stafford. Although it’s fairly low in the scales, a baron is still a member of British nobility. In some ways, he’s similar to Lord Grantham from Downton Abbey. Fellowes is a conservative member of Britain’s House of Lords.

He loves old houses.

We can be sure that Fellowes loves everything that is old. He taught us to love it too with Downton Abbey. But particularly, Fellowes is passionate about old houses, especially stately ones. Along with his wife, he likes to go around and spend time in old estates mostly to get ideas on what to do with his own house in Dorset. It’s a project that’s been long overdue, but the process of creating and remodeling seems to be the best for the couple.

He likes work over holidays.

It may seem like Fellowes is all work and no play. According to him, he will freely give up holidays just so he can get some work done. It’s an admirable quality in any man to have a much dedication to a craft as Fellowes does. It’s also an added benefit to us all because the work that he does put out is more than excellent. Downton Abbey alone is single-handedly one of the best shows we’ve seen in a long time, and we can’t wait to see what he’s got in store for us soon.
