The CW, formerly The WB, has been home to many noteworthy shows since it became one of the leading networks for original programming on basic cable, but with the rise of streaming platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, and even the Warner Bros-owned HBO Max have been competition for the primetime champ. While HBO Max has been more of an adult-oriented, R-rating platform for the DC Comics-related shows, The CW has had the lower budget Arrowverse shows that are interconnected and of “a different universe.” Outside of the several Arrowverse shows that The CW has canceled over the years, several other shows have recently been canceled by The CW in 2022 so far that have certainly upset fans of The Vampire Diaries, the Arrowverse series, and even Riverdale and more. Below we’ve detailed each show The CW canceled in 2022 so far.

Arrowverse Shows Canceled at The CW

The Arrowverse started in 2012 when Arrow premiered as a show based on one of the less-known members of the Justice League, Green Arrow. The show depicted the gritty upbringing of the hero, from his path as a lone survivor of a yacht crash on a deserted mythical island to his sacrifice to the Anti-Monitor’s war on the multiverse. While Arrow started the Arrowverse, it was expanded into various live-action and animated shows like Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, Vixen, Supergirl, Black Lightning, Superman & Lois, Batwoman, and more such as the character of Constantine portrayed by Matt Ryan across his own show, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, and beyond. While Arrow ended in 2020, Legends of Tomorrow and The Flash were the Arrowverse mainstays continuing the story Oliver Queen started. However, as The Flash had been given a ninth and final season, and Legends of Tomorrow has officially been canceled by The CW, the last season it premiered has been labeled as the last. The CW has also canceled Batwoman after a very rocky road, which has put another hole in the Arrowverse.

Legacies Canceled at The CW

Legacies, has been another show canceled by The CW, a show that has expanded much since it first premiered, as it has created a total of three different series. While the most recent series was simply called Legacies, the two series before it, which were quite popular, The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, weren’t enough to keep the series alive through its third incarnation. Overall, The Vampire Diaries started in 2009, while its second series started in 2013 but ended the same year that the third incarnation, Legacies, started.

Riverdale Canceled at The CW

Yet another show based on another work, Riverdale, based on Archie Comics, focused on the characters of the original comic strip but in a much darker setting than ever explored in the original work. Riverdale featured everything from murder and conspiracy to drugs, villainous gangs, and much more. Still, the show started to open its eyes and grab attention with its supernatural elements, as noted by the link between Riverdale and the mythical, magical happenings of The Adventures of Sabrina. Much like The Flash, The CW gave Riverdale a final season, Season 7, to wrap up its story altogether, and while it likely won’t lead to a huge conclusion for its massive lineup of characters like The Flash will do with the Arrowverse, it has still been a captivating show that will undoubtedly draw nearly all fans to its final episodes, especially with the Rivervale twist of Season 6. The beloved and now canceled show at The CW was undoubtedly one of the most interesting with its shakeup from the core material.

Reboot and Adaptation Series Canceled

The many cancellations at The CW have included some of their reboot or adaptation series, such as Roswell, New Mexico, which has been the second television adaptation of the Roswell High book series. Charmed, another reboot series based on an older series from The WB of the same name has been on since 2018 but also got the boot in 2022 in the round of canceled shows at The CW. Dynasty, another adaptation on The CW from a previous program, was inspired by the 1980s soap opera of the same name on ABC and was canceled by The CW. Finally, out of the reboots and adaptations canceled at The CW, The 4400 reboot, 4400, was canceled after only one season, even after the fan campaign to get the show to continue and brought upon the reboot, as well as DC Comics-based Naomi which did not have an Arrowverse link.

Other Series Canceled

Among the mass amount of Arrowverse, reboot, adaptation, and other content on The CW, one of the canceled shows that were completely original, In The Dark, was canceled after its fourth season premiered earlier this year and was officially canceled after it ended in May. While the show canceled at The CW was original and not based on anything else, unlike most of the programming on the network, it wasn’t enough for the network to even give it a proper sendoff.
