Unveiling the Bizarre Beasts of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
The Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves trailers have not only provided an exciting sneak peek into the highly anticipated tabletop adaptation, but they may have also inadvertently revealed the franchise’s most peculiar monster. The world of D&D is teeming with an array of bizarre creatures, ranging from the fearsome Beholders to the iconic Dragons. While dragons never fail to captivate audiences, the vast array of D&D’s monstrous menagerie is rarely explored in depth.
Upon the release of the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves trailer, sharp-eyed fans spotted a detail that suggests the filmmakers have delved deeper into the source material than previous adaptations. Characters are seen plunging into a transparent blue gelatinous cube filled with bones during a gladiatorial battle, a scene reminiscent of a magical gladiator maze trap and a monster straight out of the Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual.
Decoding the Enigmatic Gelatinous Cube of Dungeons & Dragons
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves appears to embrace the vast array of peculiar D&D creatures, featuring the likes of Owlbears. However, no Dungeons & Dragons monster is quite as enigmatic as the Gelatinous Cube. According to Dungeons & Dragons game guides, this semi-rigid mass of acidic slime can fill an entire dungeon corridor, dissolving and consuming any unfortunate creature that crosses its path. The Cube is not stationary, though; it can move slowly and even extend pseudopods to snatch creatures attempting to maintain a safe distance.
The monster in the Honor Among Thieves trailer checks all the boxes for Dungeons & Dragons’ Gelatinous Cube. Typically found in confined spaces like dungeons or caves, the Cube’s presence in an arena suggests that the proprietor has amassed a collection of monsters for hapless adventurers to face, as evidenced by the Displacer Beast in the same scene.
Why the Gelatinous Cube’s Role May Be More Significant Than It Appears
Although Gelatinous Cubes are not known for their intelligence, one Cube in Dungeons & Dragons lore defies this stereotype: Glabbagool, a sentient Gelatinous Cube created by Jubilex, the Demon Lord of Oozes. While it may seem strange for such a unique creature to be present in the arena, the owner’s penchant for collecting rare monsters could be a display of their extravagant wealth.
Another clue that this Cube may be extraordinary is the fact that the Dungeons & Dragons’ party of heroes are seen willingly diving into it. Gelatinous Cubes, as described in the Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual, are incredibly lethal and not something an experienced thief or adventurer would approach intentionally. However, Glabbagool is known for its pacifist nature, preferring to assist and understand people rather than attack them. When possible, Glabbagool even provides weapons and magical items to those in need. As a result, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves viewers may witness the party leveraging this unique NPC to escape a tight spot.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is set to release on March 31, 2023.
