When the third Deadpool movie went into production, details were kept tightly under wraps, however, it was eventually revealed that the movie would be titled Deadpool & Wolverine. From here, a trailer was released on February 11, 2024. While the action-packed teaser was enough to build some momentum, Wolverine was missing from the trailer apart from one quick shot of his towering shadow at the very end.
In efforts to build even more momentum for the movie, Ryan Reynolds gave a sneak peek at the second trailer via his X page on April 21. The slick montage of Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine footage from previous movies was overlaid with a voiceover from the brash Wade (Reynolds). However, no new footage of Wolverine was shown. But fear not – the new trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine has just landed and Jackman’s Wolverine is very much present. So, let’s break it down.
Breaking Down the Trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine
Littered with bad language, acid humour and stylized violence, the trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine is truly red band. The trailer starts off with a waring Wolverine perched up a bar drinking away his problems, however, he isn’t so welcome, with the barman telling him “you’re not welcome anywhere”. Just as things start to feel a little too bleak, Deadpool enters the frame, bringing his signature cockiness and razor-sharp wit with him. Fighting to save his world from disarray, Deadpool attempts to enlist the washed up Wolverine. However, he doesn’t seem to be persuaded very easily, as the two engage in a brutal fight.
As of yet, it is still unknown whether Jackman is playing the variant of Wolverine from Logan or the X-Men movies. Yet, the trailer does show that the two eventually band together to make the ultimate duo, with some bickering along the way. As mentioned, the comedic tone of the movie is very much felt in the trailer, adding a depth to Wolverine we haven’t seen before as Deadpool uses one of his best tools – his motormouth. But comedy aside, Deadpool & Wolverine is definitely going to be spliced with a plethora of violence, with slow motion kills galore. So, we can safely assume that the MCU’s take on Deadpool will be R-rated just like the first two entries.
What Is the Plot of Deadpool & Wolverine?
What’s so enthralling about the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer is the fact that we are given so much more footage whilst also still being shrouded in intrigue. What’s more, the footage in the trailer is by no means recycled from the teaser trailer that landed in February. This alludes to two things. Firstly, it indicates that the movie will likely be much longer than the standard 90 minute mark that action movies typically adhere to. Secondly, it leaves a level of mystery in the air as to what surprises the MCU will pull out of their sleeves in terms of twists and turns and possible character crossovers.
Although the exact plot of the movie is still being kept under a level of obscurity, eagle eyed moviegoers will likely find easter eggs if they scour the trailer long enough. The first thing fans might notice is Wolverine’s yellow costume, which closely resembles one from 2004’s X-Men. So, this could potentially give away the time setting of the film.
Furthermore, a shot in the trailer shows Deadpool and Wolverine jumping out of Ant-Man’s skull, as they evade the movie’s villain Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin). Seeing as they are hopping into an inter-dimensional portal, which are usually created by Sling Rings, this nods to the possibility that other MCU characters could emerge, as Ned Leeds, Doctor Strange and Wong all possess the ability to use Sling Rings. However, this is speculation bordering on fandom. And seeing as there will likely be no other trailers landing before the movie’s release, it seems that the MCU want viewers to go into the movie as curious and excited as possible.
When Will the Anticipated Movie Be Released?
Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine is currently still in post-production but is set to hit movie theaters on July 26, 2024. Shawn Levy has took the helm of the director’s chair, marking his second collaboration with Hugh Jackman since 2011’s Real Steele, and his third partnering with Ryan Reynolds after Free Guy, and The Adam Project. Joining Reynolds and Jackman include the likes of Morena Baccarin, Jennifer Garner, and Rob Delaney. There has also been rumors that Josh Brolin will join the movie as Cable. Before July 26 rolls around, here’s our breakdown of the teaser trailer that was released in February.
