Last night was one of the more fun theme nights on Dancing With the Stars: TV Night. This week, every pair chose a different TV theme song to dance to. For example, Carlos and Witney chose The Golden Girl’s “Thank You for Being a Friend,” whereas Nick and Sharna chose one from Downtown Abbey.
Some performances better than others. While Hayes and Emma’s dance to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme wasn’t perfect, it was easily funniest dance of the night. They got a score of 30. Before that dance was Paula and Louis’s routine, set to the Gilligan’s Island theme, and even one of the judges acknowledged how nice it was having Mary-Ann there. You also have to admire Paula because she knows when she messes up. She was even apologizing to Louis that there was a problem with the twirling in the number; they received a score of 20.
You also had the perfect dances. The couples that tied for first were Alexa and Mark and Nick and Sharna, each with a score of 36. Guest judge Alfonso Ribeira pointed out to Alexa that she could win, but that “you and Carlos cannot.” I knew that on some level Alexa and Carlos knew that, but he put the cards out on the table.
As for Nick & Sharna, Alfonso said that their performance was “near perfect,” and Julianne called it the, “best dance of the night.” I too thought it had a regal air to it. (On a side note, I think that out of all of the partners, I’d like to work with Sharna. She seems to “get” her partners. She’s getting to know Nick now, and she got to know Noah well in the previous season.)
There were several things that I noticed last night on Dancing With the Stars, besides just the dancing. The first one is that Alfonso definitely knew what he was talking about and was a really strong guest judge. We have seen guest judges in the past just comment on what fun the dancers look they’re having while performing, but he was critiquing it as tough as Julianne, Carrie Ann, and Bruno. There were points that even I wanted to him to calm down. If they ever needed a replacement judge or even a new fourth judge, Alfonso could be their man. Tom even said, “As guest judge, I love you powering through the boo’s.” If he can overcome them and know the lingo, there may be a spot for him on the judges’ table yet.
Next, the corporate synergy is crazy over at ABC! It’s one thing to interview actors from another show in the audience. It’s another thing to have the next host of American’s Funniest Home Video’s be a guest judge or to have The Muppets directing tonight’s episode. They even continued a joke from the last episode of The Muppets into this episode of Dancing With the Stars! Now, I understand that ABC is only trying to get us to watch more of its programming, but the network need to shove it down our throats.
Finally, the elimination last night came in a mean way. In jeopardy were Andy and Allison and Paula and Lois, but they were both safe because Kim and Tony were eliminated because she couldn’t make it to the ballroom because of a medical condition. On the one hand, I get it. We’ve seen people eliminated on Dancing With the Stars in the past for medical reasons, and it truly is for the best. Those are the rules. You shouldn’t tell them over Skype, though! She was saying she knew she could dance again and that she would return next week but Dancing With the Stars‘ hands were tied, so to speak. I get it, but it sucked. They weren’t even in any danger of going home but they were eliminated anyway.
Here are the standings after last night:
- Alexa & Mark- 36
- Nick & Sharna- 36
- Tamar & Val- 33
- Alek & Lindsay- 33
- Bindi & Derek- 32
- Carlos & Witney- 31
- Hayes & Emma- 30
- Andy & Allison- 29
- Gary & Anna- 25
- Paula & Louis- 20
