As a lot of you know, ABC released a screener of the finale to the press late Friday night. In our excitement, we didn’t realize there was a catch and when we got to the end of the screener we understood what a huge mistake we had just made. You might be wondering what that catch was, right? Brace yourselves (and keep in mind that you have just watched the entire episode): the last three minutes were missing.
That’s right. The last scene, the most important darned thing in the episode was missing and waiting another three whole days just to watch those final minutes was torture. Just imagine, watching the entire episode without the proposal scene.
Not. Cool.
Either way, I have just gotten to watch it and oh my god, I’m trying really hard to keep a professional front and not give in to my fangirling tendencies. Because, you guys, he proposed! Of course I am keeping a positive attitude and seriously, for the love of god, Katherine Beckett, you’d just better say yes.
I was supposed to write a preview over the weekend, but without that ending, the episode could have swung either way and up until the moment that Kate calls him asking to talk (that was when the screener ended for us), I still wasn’t sure if I liked the finale or not. Because even though I was hoping for a happy ending, I admit I was terrified that she was actually going to break things off with him and go to DC.
Hey, stranger things have happened in this show, okay?
But I am so ridiculously happy right now that I can even overlook all the heartbreaking angst we had to endure during “Watershed”. Also, I was a little surprised about how case heavy it was when Marlowe said in different interviews that the finale would focus more on their relationship and not on the case of the week. So, when I was already twenty minutes in and we still hadn’t gotten to the good part, I was starting to get a little frustrated.
Then we did get into it and we got Lanie and Papa Beckett and a lot of good stuff and and I really, really loved how Ryan revealed that Jenny is pregnant, but all I could think about was what the hell was Beckett thinking? Of course it was a great opportunity, but hello, would it have killed her to talk it over with him first? Why hide? She simply repeated the same mistake Will made way back before season 1, when he left her to go to Boston. I really, really disliked that. Because it just seemed that all this amazing progress she made over the past couple of seasons was thrown out the window with one bad decision.
I have to hand it to the writers, though, because I really didn’t have the slightest idea how it was going to end. Up until the moment he got down and on one knee and proposed, I thought he was about to tell her to take the job and go to Washington. So really, well done. They kept me on the edge of my seat until the very last moment and I was seriously in shock when he actually coughed those four little words out. A proposal had been one of my theories for the finale, but I never thought it would actually happen.
When Martha sat him down and had that talk with him, I thought this is it. Now he is going to do something drastic: either let her go or take a step forward in their relationship, but I was still leaning towards the first option.
It has been over an hour since I have watched that last scene and I still can’t process it. Because, okay, great, he proposed. But what will that mean for them? Will she say yes? What if she says no? Will she still take the job in DC? How is it going to affect their partnership?
So. Many. Questions.
And an entire summer to think about them. Now it’s up to you guys. My brain is mush.
But, oh my god, he proposed!

I have had my mouth hanging open for the last half 20 odd minutes. I can’t even believe what I just saw. Like that was such a bold move!!! I mean, HE PROPOSED! I’m sorry it’s gonna take a while to digest. Andrew Marlowe you cheeky thing, but here’s the thing, Beckett’s got the job, but we don’t know what decision she made, however, there is no show if she’s not at the precinct, so does that mean, she turns it down? Even though Castle said ‘no matter what you decide’? So many questions it’s hurting my brain!! Either way, we’ve got plenty (too much) time to think about that so for now, let’s just melt into a puddle of happiness and fangirl. Did that just happen??
Told ya your jaw would drop. Now bring back 3XK for the opener in the fall and throw all the good feels out the window.
Has there ever been a couple as UNhappily in love as Beckett and Castle, or a first love scene that was also angry sex and make-up sex? Or a proposal so joyless?
And do Kate’s potential bosses in DC realize how dependent her “independent” thinking is on her partnership with Castle, not to mention the support of the rest of their team– Esposito and Ryan and Lainie, and yes, even the two successive captains? But I’m glad Castle figured out that he can write anywhere that he has a notebook/laptop and that Alexis doesn’t need to live with him anymore.
Of course, if Kate takes the job, the writers won’t need the “death of the week” but can branch into other kinds of crimes. THAT is the biggest potential change– that and the fact that even if he drops off her lunch for her, Castle can’t hang around her office all day once she switches jobs. And she might be required to keep on-the-job secrets from him.
Of course, if the show had not been renewed, viewers could have assumed any ending from Kate turning Castle down and going to DC to her accepting him and being pregnant and quitting law enforcement altogether. There is lots of wiggle room now. I just hope she keeps in touch with her shrink.
unhappily is right. they don’t talk, hug, go anywhere, ask questions, no gifts, he doesn’t even want to know her birthday! they’re facial expressions have changed too – they looked in love for season 2 and 3 but 4 and 5 the looks changed. ryan and espo don’t seem to care either, they just keep showing up with reports leading to the killer – they ALWAYS get their man. i like the series concept but the police work and “relationship” don’t work for me. that marriage proposal was dismal. i expected much more time devoted to the relationship than the police work. what happen to the “truth conquers all” which has surfaced a number of times ?
The last time these two sat on the swings they were facing in the same direction. That gave us the impression that their relationship was going in the same direction. And if you were all paying close attention, this time at the swing set they were facing in opposite directions. Kudos to Marlowe for that.
This job offer was a way to get these two to start facing what they want out of their relationship, In their conversations with their parents we learn that each of them bales when things are getting too serious. But to or surprise Rick chooses to profess his love for Kate and he proposes – to let her know he is serious about their relationship. Now it is up to Kate to decide if she wants the job or Rick.
I have been waiting all season for these two to sit down and have a serious talk about their relationship. Well, after that surprising proposal I am sure that they will in the season opener in the fall. Things needed to change to keep the show fresh and the proposal did just that, and Kate’s answer will do even more. Will she take the job? Will she marry Castle. I hate to say it, but only time will tell.
I now understand why switching those two episodes made a difference..
Sorry but to me I think Castle proposed not because he loves her but because he’s scared or something. Im not completely sure I want Kate to say yes either.
The job offer was only a catalyst to move these two forward for sure. First of all let’s remember that the show is called “Castle”. Yes, Beckett is a most important part of the show, but Richard Castle is still the main character. The concept of the show is a writer helps a homicide detective solve cases. That can’t change, won’t change. I think she has already turned the job down. One hint came in the interrogation of the last suspect when she refers to the room as her home. A Federal agency will not allow Castle to tag along with an agent on cases. Not even in the dream world of television is this realistic. And there are some things left undone; her mother’s killer and 3XK. There is no way a government job works for the show. I suspect we may get a time jump come fall where possibly, and only possibly, Kate returns after discovering the job wasn’t for her. But in my heart of hearts, I do not believe she took the job. I had mixed feelings on the finale. One thing I do agree with, mentioned in a comment here…the whole precinct crew is dysfunctional. Everyone, Mama, Daddy, Ryan, Esposito, Lanie and even Gates know how important Castle is to the team, and how important he is to Kate. No way she takes the job. All in all I had mixed feelings about the finale. Too much procedural and not enough of what all of fandom tuned in to see.
Definitely your opinion. I mean what will that mean for them ? The whole time before the episode was a real torture and so will the next four months be. Here’s to Andrew and Terri, they know how to tease !
PS….The more I think about it the more I realize how heartless and selfish the character of Kate Beckett is. Castle was willing to blow up with her, knowing what it would do to his mom and daughter. If that ain’t love guys, then what in blazes is??? She says something like they’ve just begun. Really? A job offer comes and the lying, selfish Beckett emerges once again. Her dad says when she’s scared she hides in her work. Suggestion from Richard to Detective Kate Beckett: Get back to the therapist!! Before you end up some aging detective or government agent filled with regrets for all the people you have pushed away! I will watch in the fall, but no longer with the enthusiasm I once had for this show…which may I remind viewers and Mr. Marlowe is called…CASTLE!
Castle finally gave a serious, manly response to his feelings. Because that does not happen often, I think he wants to dig deep with Beckett for the relationship of a lifetime and none of the other types of relationships that he has endured then failed in. Good for Castle to place the ball in Kate’s court. She has to mature up also and like her dad said, make it past this stage of a relationship and go to the next level
Would be nice to have Kate take Rick at his word, accept the proposal and try the Fed job on probationary status. Have Espo/Ryan struggle with cases in NYC and have Gates bring Rick in to help them.
Run that simultaniously with Kate in DC finding it joyless without fiance, friends and family while working her cases. That would give the series validity on her return to the NYPD and not regret having tried.
Would be more fun if 3XK is the reason for her return when Tyson threatens friends and family.
Of course this is just blowing smoke, AWM has his template for season six.
Totally agree with Richard on the huge support system Kate has in NYC, that matters as we’ve seen in the past. It is the bulwark that allows Kate to be who she is. It would also allow Rick to show us his darkside. Remember how he got the intel form one of Alexis’ kidnappers, the possibility would be there in his defense of Kate. It would certainly give Kate pause wouldn’t it and add an unexplored demention to Rick.

I agree with your take on Beckett. She is amazingly heartless, just listen to what she tells her father, she knows the job will leave no time for Castle but she still wants the job. Not sure if he really loves you and not just the dance? Yeah, how could you be sure other than the whole he was willing to orphan his daughter for you. I know I’d be willing to do that for casual acquaintances and work buds, who wouldn’t?
I’ve complained before that they’ve been writing Castle this season like he’s a fool, not just living life to the full. Now I know why. Only a fool would propose to a woman who treats you like this and has amply proven only her needs matter. How could he think that a relationship would work when she so freely lies to him and keeps him in the dark? No, he should have told her good riddence and walked off.
I’ve gotta agree with both Richard and Rotwang10, This paints Kate in a really dim light. Hope Marlowe resurrects her image next season, cause right now her discription of Castle to Lanie, fits her persona more than Rick.
Wow, some of the people here clearly have never had to face this situation. As someone who has not had the most stable of living arrangements over the past eight years, I can understand her perfectly well. I have even dumped a girl I loved because I had no future living where I was and my dream was to go somewhere else and study there. Just because Beckett wants to further her career doesn’t make her heartless or even paint her in a bad light. Jesus, she’s human. She’s ambitious and has always put most of her energies into her work. Why should that change when she’s suddenly in a relationship?
Sometimes when I read these comments I end up wondering if people even understand Beckett or Castle at all or if they just find a few things they like and then build a construct in their head which bears little resemblance to the character portrayed on TV.
And let’s be honest, here, Richard. Despite the show’s name, the emphasis has always been on deconstructing Beckett, ever since Castle’s iconic speech to her telling her why she’s a cop. Castle has had very little character development until recently, so the spotlight on Beckett is hardly a new thing.
Totally agree with you! Thank you! And if anyone was to say that you would just stay with Castle and not even think about that job, you’re lying to yourself. As humans, it’s all about ourselves, that’s how we are; and that job was an amazing chance to further her career!
Also, as I know, real life proposals aren’t perfect and some aren’t even that romantic. The proposal was perfect for them, and bright lighting or whatever would’ve ruined the surprise. I wouldn’t change a thing of the finale. I know Andrew has season 6 planned already and without drama and little bumps in the relationship, this show wouldn’t exist.
And Rotwang10, just a reminder that the two characters haven’t actually talked about their future before, so if you were just in some relationship, which you had no idea of where it was heading, then isn’t your curiosity going to push you to explore other options/opportunities? Just a thought.
I’m all for taking risks and going for what you want in a career, but what Castle and Beckett have is pretty special, something that comes once in a lifetime. There’s no way Kate isn’t aware of that. So instead of doing grown up thing and sit down to talk to him before making any decisions, she’s talking to him after she decided. Just because they didn’t talk about where their relationship is going, doesn’t mean it’s not serious. It’s quite obvious to everybody that they’re serious as hell.
Maybe it’s just me, but real love trumps career every time.. Leaving your soul-mate for a job is something you regret for the rest of you life. certainly more then wrong career moves.
Castle’s proposal for matrimionio already planned in the capital of Eric, I think that Castle was going apedir marriage at dinner at Kate, but the issue of the nuisance flight, so Castle told him at that time I could not be there, and went, and when hablaro was when it asked, I’ll take what I said the castle was willing to take one more step, and that step is to be a lifetime with Kate.

Having to choose a job over someone is a tough choice for sure. I agree. And relationships require commitment, flexibility, and sometimes growth through adversity. Please don’t insult my intelligence or other viewers by suggesting we are too shallow to understand TV characters. I think you would agree that few relationships have had to deal with life and death situations as have Castle and Beckett. It is one thing to have a tough decision over someone you care about and your career. It goes to another level I think when one has proved themselves time and again, and even ready to die for the other. But then, I’m guess I don’t understand character development or life, though I have had much experience in real life with both. Bottom line, it’s a tv show, and people here have fun commenting on it. No need for condescending snarky comments from you Harlean.
relationship wise, if Kate actually decides to take the job, then there’s going to be huge fireworks!! I mean, think about it. Castle will definitely try to sneak in her case, and all hilarity will ensue! But I’ll miss Ryan and Espo.

To add to Richards comments, there is a life long bond that is formed under extreme conditions shared in combat, it is something anyone whose served in the military can attest to. It is why soldiers will throw themselves on and explosive to save their comrades. When his buddies are asked why he did it,the answer is always the same,”because he saw it first.” Everyone, cool your jets, Beckett will accept both, leaving the 12th precinct until Marlowe decides it’s time for her return. Who says an author can’t shadow a federal agent, we’ve seen him accompany the top NYPD detective for five years. Federal regs don’t apply to fictional characters, why ruin a good plotline with logic.
Lame love your Season 6 opener!
Wow, people are harsh with Beckett. You are right, this is the most meaningful relationship she has ever been in and in many ways I think she knows that. Yet at the same time she has been consumed with her mother’s death from the time it has happened never truly living until Castle came into her life. Now that he has broken down the walls this has allowed her not only to choose to be in a relationship with him but to want more career-wise. This is all new to her…she’s human. So she has to grapple with wanting more out of life, relationship and career. She will and I’m sure just like the Season 4 Finale will realize she just wants Rick but I think that the writers are doing an excellent job of developing characters and relationship. This is why I agree with Lame to have her choose the job and realize where she truly belongs.

In the last few episodes Beckett has been trying to get Castle to talk about their relationship ,but couldn’t get her point across to him .She really wanted him to ask her to marry her it was written all over her face each time she tried .She was frustrated ,so when the agent in the human factor episode mentioned this opening she thought it might be a good alternative if Castle was never going to talk about their relationship or ask her to marry her .She should of told him ,instead she wound up hurting him .As for Castle he loves her so much he came to the conclusion he’ll do whatever she wants to do and he finally realized asking her to marry him is what he wants to although he’s still really mad at her.
She will accept his proposal.She also thought he was going to break up with her that’s why she had that hurt look on her face when he proposed to her she was surprised .One thing is for sure they both are going to need therapy . The
The season finale was good ,but I never saw that proposal coming .The way Castle was talking to Beckett I thought he was going to break up with her .She had such a hurt look on her face she also was surprised when he proposed to her .I really should of expected anything from Castle Because from the beginning he’s been madly in love with her and would do anything she wanted to make her happy and be with her .I hope she says yes because that’s what she wanted .In the last few episodes she was trying to get him to talk about their relationship or get him to propose but she couldn’t get her point across to him .Lets hope they start talking to each other and both of them get therapy so they can work out their problems.
Yes I get that at times, she might be a little selfish, but she also told Castle to go, because she wouldn’t let him die and leave Alexis and Martha because of her.
