An Officer And A Gentleman Remake: Everything We Know So Far

Paramount Pictures has a history of creating some of the most iconic films of our time, with their remake of the 1984 classic, Footloose being just one of the examples. And now, they’re adding another beloved film to their remake roster: the critically acclaimed romantic drama, An Officer and a Gentleman. With this addition, viewers can look forward to experiencing a modern take on this timeless story. The classic 1982 romcom starred Richard Gere as Zack Mayo, an aspiring navy pilot who begins his first whirlwind romance with a young local woman Paula (Debra Winger) while going through training under Marine Corps Sergeant Emil Foley (Louis Gossett Jr.).

The Oscar-winner original film broke ground and Gossett went down in history as the first black man to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Now, it’s evident that Hollywood is going through a wave of reboots and sequels. But this remake of An Officer and a Gentleman remake has some big shoes to fill. The original 80s classic was a resounding success across all boards and became a major box office hit. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards and went on to win the Best Original Song award for “Up Where We Belong.” So, the modern re-telling is brimming with endless new possibilities all the while holding on to the charm of the original story. Here’s everything we know so far about the exciting An Officer And A Gentleman remake.

What Will The Modern ‘An Officer And A Gentleman’ Be About?

While plot details and a release date haven’t been confirmed yet, the remake of An Officer And A Gentleman is expected to hold on to the original plot line with no major changes. Paramount Pictures has reportedly hired Dana Fox to write the script. Given her extensive background in the romcom genre and her experience writing hit films such as 27 Dresses, The Wedding Date, Cruella, and The Lost City. The audience can expect this remake to hold on to the emotional core of the original version with all the elements of a modern rom-com.

The 1982 film is the product of an entirely different time. So, with four decades between the original and the remake, the new version will inevitably cater to modern times. However, down to the very core, the storyline will likely remain the same as an aspiring Naval Aviation Officer juggles newfound love while trying to get through Naval Academy. There’s no saying what the remake will do differently, but we can expect the love story to remain intact under the helm of Dana Fox.

The Cast Of An Officer And A Gentleman Remake Will Need To Live Up To the Original

One major Hollywood name buzzing around the news of the An Officer and a Gentleman remake is Top Gun: Maverick star, Miles Teller. Given Teller’s role in the 2022 film as naval aviator Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the actor is reported to be taking on Richard Gere’s iconic role. But it’s no surprise that Teller’s screen credits are phenomenal, to say the least. From his performance in the Footloose remake to his antagonistic role in Divergent, and his breakout role in Whiplash — the actor’s filmography speaks for itself. So it doesn’t come as a surprise that he’s a top contender for the remake.

Teller is also set to appear in the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic Michael along with another rom-com titled Eternity alongside Elizabeth Olsen. Now, with An Officer And A Gentleman added to his list of upcoming films, it will be interesting to see his version of this iconic Richard Gere role. The cast list hasn’t been released just yet, though, so it’s hard to say which other stars will be on board. But considering how iconic the cast of the original film was, the remake is expected to live up to its standards.
