Why Shameless Season 8 Was Its Worst So Far

They’re still as dysfunctional as ever, but for some reason we like watching them screw up even after so many seasons. In fact, Showtime’s already renewed Shameless for another season, which will be the 9th season. It’s set to premiere towards the end of this year, but we can’t help but think that season 8 should’ve probably been its last. It had one of the best premieres ever, taking in 1.86 million viewers for the first episode, yet it just went downhill from there.  Granted we believe it’s still one of the best shows on TV but here are few of the reasons why we think that Shameless’ season 8 was the worst of the show so far.

Frank’s disappointingly alright

One of the main reasons why the Gallagher family was so screwed up was because their patriarch, William H. Macy’s Frank Gallagher, was the biggest screw up of them. He was drunk, pathetic, and simply entertaining to watch. You can say that he was the reason for the entire show. Yet season 8 started off with Frank returning from the monastery. That statement alone doesn’t even sound right, and it shouldn’t belong to any story line in this show at all. He even starts a business of some sorts later on in the season–not something the Frank we know would even think about doing.

Lip’s sobriety is taking too long

We almost want to say, “Get on with it already.” Actually, that’s exactly what we said the entire season. We get it; sobriety has been tough on the guy. But we need to see some actual changes instead of just the drag of the meetings, the violent sex, and what not. We need to see Lip doing something different because we’re really getting bored with it. It’s gotten overly depressing, especially when he had to deal with Youens’ death in episode 10. Give the guy a break and let him be with Sierra already.

Fiona needs a new life too

The champion of the family needs an electric shock or a breather or something. If Lip’s sobriety story dragged, Fiona’s story dragged even worse. Maybe it’s the whole building arc–it’s just not interesting or “shameless” enough. It’s like there’s an eviction here and a renovation there and another tenant acting up here and there and everywhere. It’s all the same stuff on repeat. Fiona needs to do something else other than fight with Ian. Fiona needs to get away from the apartment story and find something that will make us all like her again. She also needs to leave Franny alone, by the way.

What is going on with Ian?

Ian is just so messed up–it’s utterly depressing. We can’t figure out where his character is headed towards, and in the final episode, it looks like Ian has gone completely dark on us all. There’s no fear or remorse in his face as he got into the police squad car. Ian getting arrested may be very Gallagher, but if there were one Gallagher that was supposed to be lighthearted, it was meant to be Ian. But gone are those days, and innocent gay Ian is not so innocent anymore.
