There are a lot of interesting shows on TV these days. From programs that make you laugh, make you think, as well as shows which are nothing more than silly escapism to enjoy during those precious moments of downtime. What is considered an “important” show to one viewer may just cause a fight for the remote next week. We can’t all agree on the value of a particular show but here are some that might just fit the description of “important” as they carry a socially important message about the world we live in today. Here are five show we consider to be pretty important for just about everyone watching.
Dark Net
Dark Net is more of a cautionary tale than entertainment, yet it is important and timely. To know about the trouble you can bring on yourself with a few strokes of a keyboard makes this “must see TV” for anyone who thinks that you are anonymous behind the keyboard and that your kids are actually safe online without supervision.
Along the same lines you might want to check out Web of Lies too.
Transparent
Ever since Caitlyn Jenner’s very public transition, transgender issues have been a hot topic. Showing a family who all have to go through changes after “Dad” becomes “Mom” through humor and wisdom gives people a glimpse into what it is like to live the life of a transgender person. Many folks do not personally know a transgender individual, so this show is a good education. The family has problems but beneath all of their self-centeredness, they really love “Mom”.
Shameless
Yes, the show is funny but it is oddly comforting to those who have grown up poor or still live paycheck to paycheck. Fiona shows us that you don’t need the best labels to be smoking hot and that it wasn’t just your family who hid the grocery money in a kitchen canister In these days of glamour TV, where no one is ever desperately broke long term, shows like Shameless depict what life is really like for far too many families. I see Lip as a hero for all the smart kids who deserve to go to college but have serious financial obstacles to get there. Poverty is a real social issue for many Americans.
Catfish
Online hookups have never been more popular. If you think real people don’t get catfished you are mistaken. There are people right now lurking online looking for gullible people who are looking for love. Catfish takes a somewhat balanced view in that sometimes people who meet online do fall in love and end up together, but more often than not, that Facebook profile is not what it seems. For moms and dads watching the show with your teenagers is the perfect opportunity to start a dialogue about online dating. Dark Net is not appropriate for teens, but for now, this topic can easily be broached through this popular show on MTV.
The Bachelor (and others of that ilk)
These shows are important for women to watch because it teaches them to value their own worth by showing how silly “competing” for affection really looks like (If you missed that life lesson in high school) Yeah, it’s not pretty. Do the opposite. You don’t have to compete for a man. Repeat: You don’t have to do that! If a guy is really into you, you won’t have to spy on him making out with several others in hopes that you are deemed good enough to get a rose. Same advice for guys. You don’t need to scheme, or fight or be judged like a slab of beef in a meat market. Also, you can see how unattractively drunk people can behave. If you have been following the news of what happened on the so-called “Paradise” edition, the point is clear.
