Like many of you other men out there I have a wife who is obsessed with the red carpet and The Oscars. My wife, and I quote, considers this time of year to be her “Super Bowl.” It’s hard to argue with that logic. While I consider today to be any other day of the week, I know that when its Super Bowl Sunday I get virtually any concession I want so that I can watch the big game. This is her “big game” and while I may disagree with it, I have to respect it. In the 12 + years we’ve been together I’ve picked up plenty of things about how to approach this day and how to behave. Here’s a little guide I’ve put together for husbands around the country who have a wife that’s super into the Red Carpet as well as Academy Awards.
Husbands take the kids from 4pm on – no exceptions
If you are married and have children, you must offer to take care of the kids from 4pm on. This is assuming you have little kids. Not sure what your arrangement is with your significant other but me and my wife tend to rotate when it comes to putting the kids to bed (we have two). Not on Oscar night. It’s one day out of the year and I make sure the kids are with me from 4pm on.
DVR or Tape Everything
Make sure everything possible with regards to coverage and the awards are taped. While my wife loves to watch live, I make sure everything is taped and I even go 30 minutes over just to make sure. God forbid for some reason they have to miss the show.
Give them an hour
If your significant other isn’t having an Oscars party with their friends then watch with them for the first hour. That’s usually enough time to appease them where they feel you’ve been a good husband and cared about their interest. You get bonus points if you watch any of E!’s red carpet show. That’s tough to do with kids but it’s been done before. Tire the kids out all day so they pass out early.
In that hour act interested
For one day out of the year I actually engage in conversation with my wife about what the actors are wearing and I get into rumor and gossip mode with my wife. To be honest it’s kind of fun but if the wife is watching alone, don’t let her be alone. Let her complain about actresses and their dresses. They’ll thank you later for it.
Avoid the entire thing Altogether
Whenever possible, just don’t be home. Period. If you’re not home you don’t have to worry about any of the above information. Then again if you’re away with your kids by yourself you might have more stress than if you just stayed home and did what you were supposed to do.
