The Originals Season 2 Episode 7 Review: “Chasing the Devil’s Tail”

The Originals 2.07

The Originals writers are really doing an excellent job this season picking up speed with the fast-paced storylines we first grew to expect on The Vampire Diaries.  No sooner did we meet Klaus’ biological father before (SPOILER!) he met his untimely death.  It seems like there’s so much more of Kol’s backstory that they’ve even created a supplemental web series called The Originals: The Awakening which debuted last week.  All this and more made for another exciting episode last night with lots to discuss, so let’s jump right in.

Between this week and last, Klaus has really bonded with both of his parents.  Esther released Elijah to Klaus even though he was still under her dream spell from which Klaus couldn’t save him alone.  That’s where Ansel comes in, because he recognizes the plants Esther once used to control Mikael into a deep slumber.

Even though Ansel was initially brought back from the Other Side to help sway Klaus into accepting Esther’s offer, he makes it clear to Klaus that he means him no harm.  Of course Ansel probably should’ve known better from his years of watching Klaus to know that bringing up Hope would be a dangerous subject.  He said it himself that he saw the good in his son over the years, and even seconds before Klaus murdered the father he always needed, Ansel doubted Klaus would actually kill him.  I can’t say that I’m too surprised although it is a shame, especially since Klaus only did it to protect Hope.  Who’s to say Esther doesn’t already know that Hope is still alive?  I would think that if Ansel could feel a connection to his granddaughter then so should Esther.  If that’s the case then Ansel really died for nothing.

Davina and Kol return home to New Orleans when Kol is summoned by Esther.  They’ve been holed up in a motel room where poor Davina has had to put up with Kol being nothing but sweet.  She complains for him to stop calling her darling and trying to be funny but it’s obvious to everyone (Kol included) that she already likes him.  I don’t blame her in the least bit.  Like I said before, Daniel Sharman‘s accent alone is a beautiful distraction.  Their chemistry is pretty impressive as well, as evidenced by that bracelet scene.

Kol must have already told Davina that he was a witch before he was turned into a vampire, but that was news to me.  I had not checked out the web series yet at that point but it really ties into this episode.  (Nate Buzolic reprises his role as the original incarnation of Kol.)  Even though he lost his magic, he continued to help witches in the Quarter make Dark Objects.  He trusts Davina enough considering one of her ancestors had placed a spell on a tomb where he hid all of his weapons.  This all ties back into their greater purpose to use a Dark Object on Klaus that won’t kill him but only keep him immobilized in a box.  So basically, an equivalent to the white oak stake that has coincidentally gone missing from Davina’s possession when she finally gave in and got some sleep.

Davina will no doubt assume Kol took the stake back to his mommy as he was supposed to all along.  What she doesn’t know is that Marcel, doing his “protective dad stuff” actually kidnapped Kol.  But who has the white oak stake then?!

Father Kieran’s Dark Objects finally come into play now as Cami is more than willing to be the bait in a trap to capture Finn using chains that render a witch’s magic useless.  Klaus and Elijah have their brothers but Esther was last seen closing in on Cami.  Uh-oh!  This can’t be good news for anyone.

How excited are you to see Rebekah and Hope back next week?  It should be another nail biter of an episode!
