It was announced last week that CBS had ordered a pilot for a spin-off of How I Met Your Mother. The show would be titled How I Met Your Father and follow the same premise as the current series, but with different characters. That was the only good news fans would be getting because one of the most boring episodes of the current season aired a few dyas following that announcement.
The episode entitled, “Mom and Dad,” takes place 27 hours before the wedding. I know what you are thinking. We still have 27 hours worth of storyline before the actual wedding takes place?! If it makes you feel better, roughly 8 of those hours will consist of the characters sleeping and we will not have to watch that, if we are lucky.
John Lithgow and Wayne Brady reprise their roles as Barney’s (Neil Patrick Harris) dad and brother, respectively. Barney is excited at the thought of his father and mother (Frances Conroy) getting back together, even though his father is currently married to someone else. James (Brady) is also delighted about the possibility of his father reconnecting with their mother. Also, James’ father has just been selected to replace the minister who had passed away the night prior.
Barney concocts a plan to get his mother to pick his dad over James’ father. The scheme consists of a suicide note, a skydiving meeting, and a romantic rendezvous in an elevator. Believe me, it sounds more exciting than how it actually turned out. The plan backfires after Barney and James witness their mother and James’ dad kissing on a hotel balcony. They announce to the guys that they had reconnected just before the wedding festivities.
Where was Ted (Josh Radnor) while this was happening? He was taking his best man duties very seriously and guarding a Wayne Gretzky picture Barney has purchased for Robin (Cobie Smulders), who was drastically underused in this episode. While Ted is in the shower, the photo is ruined. Someone broke into his hotel room and spilled calligraphy ink all over it. With the help of Lily (Alyson Hannigan), who has been underused all season long, they figure out who the culprit is: Billy Zabka.
Billy wanted to become Barney’s best man again. All of his life he has always played the part of the bully. This was the first time he was thought of in a different light. He believed if he framed Ted for ruining the picture, Barney would ask him to take on the best man role again. Ted, being the great guy he is, takes the blame. Barney brushes it off and is happy the picture was not actually ruined. Ted remains best man and Billy has a new found appreciation for Ted.
The one piece of exciting news from this episode is the car ride between Marshall (Jason Segel) and Daphne (Sherri Shepherd) has finally come to an end. Marshall drops her off at her daughter’s school so she can witness the young girl’s United Nations presentation. Hopefully, this will mean that Marshall will be in Farhampton next week. When he does finally make it to the hotel, this will pave the way to give Alyson Hannigan some material worthy of her acting skills.
All great shows deliver a less than stellar episode from time to time. It just happened to be this week that we witneseds that episode from How I Met Your Mother. Don’t let this one episode hinder you from watching how this awesome series turns out. Based on the spoilers I have been reading, you will not be disappointed. Not to give too much away, but Robin will be meeting “The Mother” very soon.
