Heat 2: Every Actor Who Has Circled a Role So Far

Heat 2 is the long-awaited follow-up to the classic 1995 crime drama. Veteran filmmaker Michael Mann has been nurturing this project with pure passion. In 2022, he announced plans to turn his novel into a motion picture, and hype has been mounting ever since.

Mann’s novel of the same name – which he co-wrote with Meg Gardiner, acts as both a prequel and a sequel to 1995’s Heat. Spanning multiple timelines and locations, the book brings back both Robert De Niro and Al Pacino‘s iconic characters. While many speculated the film will use de-ageing to tell this grand story, Michael Mann’s casting choices reveal something different. As of yet, only one actor has officially confirmed a role in Heat 2, but several other A-list stars have been circling it. So, let’s break them down.

Austin Butler

The notion that Austin Butler would star in Heat 2 first felt more like fanfare. Movie fanatics were calling for the Elvis star to feature in the movie mostly for his similar looks to Val Kilmer, who played criminal Chris Shiherlis. In the original movie, Shiherlis is the only member of the thieves who survives. In the 2022 novel continuation, we catch up with him as he makes a new life for himself in Paraguay, working security for a Taiwanese-Paraguayan crime family.

Butler has been very careful when asked about potentially starring in Heat 2. While he hasn’t flat-out denied it, he has far from confirmed it either. However, he has expressed his desires to work with Mann, calling him a “master”.

Heat 2: Every Actor Who Has Circled a Role So Far

Adam Driver

Rumored Heat 2 Cast: Adam Driver

Adam Driver was one of the first names to be mentioned when it was announced that Heat 2 was a go picture. The Oscar-nominated actor was fresh off a collaboration with Mann with the biopic, Ferrari. More recently, his name has slipped to the wayside, however, he is still listed on the film’s IMDB page. He was initially tapped to play the younger version of De Niro’s character Neil McCauley. According to Deadline, Driver recently backed out of Nancy Meyer‘s new movie to keep himself available for Heat 2.

Stephen Graham

Rumored Heat 2 Cast: Stephen Graham

Renowned British actor Stephen Graham has worked with some of the biggest filmmakers of all time, Michael Mann included. The two collaborated in 2009 when Graham played Baby Face Nelson in Public Enemies. In late 2025, rumors began swirling that Graham has been offered the role of young McCauley. As of yet, Graham has not confirmed this and simply showered the original movie with praise. He is next set to star in the Netflix original movie, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.

Bradley Cooper

Rumored Heat 2 Cast: Bradley Cooper

12-time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper would undoubtedly be an excellent casting choice for Heat 2. However, rumor has it that he is a backup option. With Leonardo DiCaprio being the main big ticket item for the film, reports indicate that Cooper is the next choice if things take a different turn. If Cooper loses out, we will still see him take on a legacy project with Steven Spielberg‘s upcoming Bullitt remake.

Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio in Inception (2010)

Leonardo DiCaprio is not just a difficult actor to lock down, he also comes with a hefty price tag. However, that shouldn’t be a problem for the production of Heat 2 considering it reportedly has a whopping $200 million budget. For a while, it was alluded that the film was resting on the casting of DiCaprio. Yet with several other big names attached, the light is truly green. DiCaprio hasn’t confirmed his role as of yet, but he has spoken about the film in a way that signifies he is heavily involved.

This is very much its own movie. We’re still working on it, we’re a ways away from production. It tips its hat to Heat, but it’s an homage, and it picks up the story from there. The book is already out there, so there are no big secrets that I’m divulging. It’s set in the future, and the past, from that pivotal moment in what I think is the great crime noir film of my lifetime. It’s one of those films that just keeps resonating, that we keep talking about, that has been imitated so many times and influenced so many different movies. So, we’re working on it.

Christian Bale (Confirmed Lead for Heat 2)

Christian Bale is the only actor to have confirmed his role in Heat 2. While he hasn’t divulged which role he will be taking on, it has been confirmed that it will be a leading character. This has not only upped the hype because of his A-list stature, but also because it would mark his first ever time sharing the screen with DiCaprio if he decides to board. When talking about the role, he explained how he will be heading to Chicago begin filming. This has kicked up speculation that he will either be playing a young McCauley, a younger Vincent Hanna (originally played by Pacino), or Otis Wardell, the sadistic villain introduced in the 2022 novel.
