10 Facts You Didn’t Know about the Movie “13 Hours”

There are likely still people who want to reopen the Benghazi case and find out just what happened, but 13 Hours at least does a credible job of retelling the story of the brave soldiers that were forced to hold out against insurmountable odds. The lives lost during this attack were tragedies that many people still feel were not adequately justified, but the issue has been glossed over so many times now that reopening it would take a titanic effort that many don’t feel the need for any longer. This is unfortunate since the sacrifice of these men was something that needed justification.

The movie at least was well-received by the families of the fallen.

10. The two main buildings that were used in the film were mapped out and recreated down to every detail.

Director Michael Bay wanted to make sure that he was as accurate as could be with the reconstruction of the scene so that the movie would pay tribute to what happened.

9. The original cut was four hours long.

This at least one to two hours longer than many people want to spend in a movie theater unless the movie is gripping enough. Even then people will be likely to have to take bathroom breaks.

8. John Krasinski had to drop a lot of body fat in order to prep for his role.

He went from around 25 percent body fat down to 8 to play the role of US Navy SEAL Jack Silva. That kind of prepped him for future roles as a hardened individual.

7. One of the actual people involved in the real life occurrence took the place of one of the actors without being noticed at first.

Mark Geist took the place of the actor playing his part one day and Michael Bay didn’t even notice until he turned around to face the camera.

6. Michael Bay felt very qualified to tell this story.

This wasn’t the first war story he’d told and he felt that he was qualified to bring the story back to life and do it the justice it deserved.

5. The mortar rounds that were used had a kill radius of 21 feet.

That generally means that anyone within that radius is out of luck when the mortar goes off. Cover is possible but the deafening explosion and the concussion would still probably be felt.

4. Both Krasinski and Chris Kyle, from American Sniper, wore the Punisher emblem on their vests.

Soldiers tend to wear various emblems on their bulletproof vests on occasion to show what unit they’re from or for other reasons.

3. Mark Wahlberg was supposed to have a role in this movie.

He was supposed to play the character of Rone but he had scheduling conflicts so he wasn’t able to join the cast.

2. This was based on the true story of what happened in Benghazi.

A lot of people are still sore about what happened over in Libya but many have come to accept that it can’t be changed and the ones responsible for being caught unawares have been let off the hook.

1. Krasinski actually auditioned for the role of Captain America.

He’s called Captain America at one point in the movie, and he did actually audition, but obviously the part didn’t go to him.

Those people that still bristle over this incident do so for a good reason.
