There is a new Halloween movie that is expected to come out in 2018. For those who are unfamiliar with that particular franchise, the movies are centered around a serial killer named Michael Myers who chooses to commit his crimes on Halloween, thus the name. With that said, it is interesting to note that the Halloween creator John Carpenter has announced that the upcoming movie will be a follow-up to the first Halloween movie and nothing but the first Halloween movie, which has some rather important implications for what other people can expect content-wise.
Why Does This Matter?
Some people might be curious about why this choice was made. If so, it should be mentioned that the upcoming movie will be the 11th installment in the franchise. That much content is a huge obstacle to people who might be interested in the basic concept but are unwilling to put in the time, effort, and other resources needed to watch the previous Halloween movies. Something that is particularly true because there have been significant gaps between each installment, as shown by the fact that the 10th installment came out in 2009.
However, there is an even more serious problem in the fact that the Halloween movies are not a single continuity but rather a collection of them. For example, Michael Myers was killed in Halloween II, which is why Halloween III had a narrative that had no real connection with the two previous installments. However, fans of the franchise had a poor reaction to that fact, which is why Michael Myers made a return in Halloween IV, V, and VI. Fortunately or unfortunately, Halloween H20 and its follow-up Halloween: Resurrection ignored those three movies, but the poor performance of the latter resulted in a reboot of the first movie called Halloween, which had its own follow-up that was called Halloween II. Summed up, even if the people behind the upcoming Halloween movie were interested in maintaining continuity with the previous movies, the franchise is such a mess that it would have been a nightmarish process for no real benefit.
What Can We Expect from Halloween?
Regardless, there is a fair amount of interest in the upcoming Halloween movie because it sees the return of John Carpenter, who was the director of the first Halloween movie as well as the co-writer of the first two Halloween movies with Debra Hill. Furthermore, it is important to note that Jamie Lee Curtis will be making a return to the franchise as well as Laurie Strode, who was the heroine of the first two Halloween movies. In other words, there is a fair amount of the talent that made the first two Halloween movies so memorable lined up behind this particular project, which is reason for interested individuals to hope that it will result in something worth watching.
With that said, it will be interesting to see how John Carpenter’s influence will affect the course of the franchise as well. After all, he is known to have been less than enthusiastic about how the sequels to the first Halloween movie turned out, meaning that it is possible that the upcoming movie will not retread familiar ground but rather strike out in an unknown and unexpected direction. Something that should provide plenty of opportunities for speculation while interested individuals wait for further news to come out.
