X-Men: The Animated Series was a famous animated comic book series on TV from 1992-1997, with five fantastic seasons. The show following members of Charles Xavier’s X-Men superhero team was so successful that reruns were aired for years. According to viewers, it remains one of the most iconic Marvel adaptations, perfectly depicting intriguing storylines like the Dark Phoenix saga, which movies like X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019) and X-Men: Days of Future Past(2014) tried unsuccessfully to bring to the big screen.
2024 Marvel’s X-Men 97 will be trying to recapture the magic of the OG series by continuing a day after the 1992 animated series left off. And that’s a complex legacy to live up to with the current pressure on Marvel projects and the superhero fatigue among most audiences. However, Marvel seems to have hit the jackpot, with this series already receiving flattering reviews, terming it the best Marvel release in years. It’s also one of the only shows in 2024 with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating. And only a few episodes are available. After almost three decades, here is what you need to know about what happens to your favorite heroes in X-Men 97.
What Happened in the Original X-MenAnimated Series?
X-Men 97 has plenty to live up to with the legacy of the original series, which was a beloved cartoon for millions of children and adults. Throughout the series, the X-Men have to go up against various foes, with Magneto being one of the main ones until the final season, where they need his help to save Professor Xavier, who is in a coma. Before his change of heart, Magneto is about to go to war with non-powered people because of the unrest caused by the existence of mutants, but all that comes to a halt when Xavier dies in the series finale.
The show doesn’t hide Magneto and Professor X’s close friendship. They mainly differ on whether peace between humans and mutants is possible. In the 2024 X-Men 97 series’ trailer, it seems Professor X leaves Magneto in charge of his school of gifted children, but that may not go too well with the X-Men members, especially Cyclops, who is the new leader of the team and tasked with taking care of what the Professor left behind.
What Is the Plot of X-Men 97?
The plot of X-Men 97 will continue where the 90’s series left off, with Cyclops being the new team leader and Storm and Wolverine trying to run the school the way Professor X would have wanted. It isn’t going to be easy, though. Magneto has now moved into a suite in the Mansion to fulfill Xavier’s last wishes. However, with any comic book storyline, Xavier could return to the X-Men story further down the line. With Magneto’s place now with the X-Men, the new big-bad will be a foe the X-Men have gone up against, Mr. Sinister, who wants to end the X-men for good. X-Men 97’s trailer was released on February 15, 2024, much to fans’ excitement because the less than two-minute trailer packs plenty of drama and teases an action-packed season to look forward to.
