The characters of Beavis and Butt-Head have certainly been one of the most memorable duos of adult comedy animated television and definitely the most popular and favorite animated duo and possible duo overall on MTV. Since the original Beavis and Butt-Head series premiered on MTV in 1993, the incredible stupid pair have had two films and two reboot series, as well as smaller ventures in other media such as comic books. As the second movie was released on Paramount+ earlier this year and the second series reboot premiered after, we felt it complementary to dive into what separated the various Beavis and Butt-Head projects from each other that have graced our eyes from the classic cable television era to the streaming era, thanks to the genius of Mike Judge.
Beavis and Butt-Head Original MTV Show
While the characters of Beavis and Butt-Head originated in a 1992 short film by Mike Judge called Frog Baseball, which featured Beavis and Butt-Head doing various destructive teenage habits like throwing fireworks, playing violently with a baseball bat, and watching television. While the film may not seem like much, it was enough to inspire an entire series of Beavis and Butt-Head, which created the longest-running Beavis and Butt-Head project with seven seasons on MTV before it was initially ended in 1997, but a movie was released before the end of the first Beavis and Butt-Head project. Beyond the various Beavis and Butt-Head projects that have come to live and die, Mike Judge has stated that there’s some possibility of a live-action adaptation of Beavis and Butt-Head, although he’s been hesitant to bring it to life.
Beavis and Butt-Head Do America
Released in 1996, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America was not only a full-length feature that put America’s biggest pop culture idiots on billboards and big screens, but it also featured the voice of some pretty phenomenal actors and personalities at the time. Actors and personalities such as Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, David Letterman, and others provided their voices for different parts of the film. Overall, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America was the first proper adventure for the dumb duo. It set them on a dumb and mostly accidental journey across the country, practically destroying everything in sight. Had the movie been created knowing that the following season would be the last, the future of the various Beavis and Butt-Head projects could have been entirely different from what we know now.
Beavis and Butt-Head MTV Revival Series
As the original Beavis and Butt-Head series ended in 1997 and the first film was released in 1996, the MTV revival series was released in 2011, over a decade since a Beavis and Butt-Head project was considered new. Being in a new age, it was the proper time to bring Beavis and Butt-Head back through a different project that closely reflected the original but felt more modern. However fantastic of an idea it may have seemed to bring a new Beavis and Butt-Head project to life through a new season of the classic show, it only lasted the one season it was granted for revival and no renewal for another.
Beavis and Butt-Head Do The Universe
Yet another decade later, this time flipping it around, Beavis and Butt-Head returned in a new project as an entirely new movie, instead of a revival series first, called Beavis and Butt-Head Do The Universe. While the film was exciting for longtime fans of Beavis and Butt-Head, the new Paramount+ movie was a surprise to be announced, but fans were delighted for a full-length return of the destructive Beavis and Butt-Head. Overall, Beavis and Butt-Head Do The Universe had a similar premise to the original movie, in which they went on a destructive path. Still, the entire universe and multiple reality were their accidental target instead of America. Interestingly, the newest Beavis and Butt-Head project in the form of a movie retconned the events of the MTV revival series, as Beavis and Butt-Head went from 1998 to 2022 in the events of the film, not that the MTV series was too monumental.
Beavis and Butt-Head Paramount+ Revival Series
Finally, Beavis and Butt-Head touched upon their return to television from the streaming movie Beavis and Butt-Head Do The Universe with a series on the same platform as the film, Paramount+, with the second revival series of Beavis and Butt-Head, although initially intended for Comedy Central. As most shows and movies today follow a certain kind of continuity and recollection of the events within their own franchise, Beavis and Butt-Head have also started to lean that way. In Beavis and Butt-Head Do The Universe, various different, and undoubtedly unique, variations of Beavis and Butt-Head appear throughout the multiversal film and are brought back in the newest revival series of Beavis and Butt-Head on Paramount+.Beavis and Butt-Head touched upon their return to television
