TVOvermind Round Table: The Flash Season 1

The Flash vs. Arrow 1

The finale opened up a lot of possibilities for some major changes for not just The Flash, but also Arrow and the upcoming spin-off DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. How much do you think it will change the CW/DC Universe as a whole, and what effect would you want it to have on this show when it returns in the fall?

Andy Behbakht: I am both excited, but also very curious about how this affects the entire future of the CW/DC Universe and not just these upcoming seasons in the fall. I do think the wormhole is going to open up the idea of universe remodeling in the near future, where certain elements that have previously been established will be modified, and this finale will also really play a huge part in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow more so than it will for Arrow and The Flash. I’m always game for time travel and alternative universe stories, but I can definitely see the need of it being kept at a stable level. But these showrunners for all the shows (Marc Guggenheim, Geoff Johns, Andrew Kreisberg, and Greg Berlanti) have already proven to me that they know what they are doing, so I’m just excited to learn what these new seasons will be like after this finale.

Jasef Wisener:  The season finale of The Flash was almost perfect to me, because I honestly don’t know where it can go from here. More possibilities opened up than I ever anticipated, and I’m really just excited to see how it continues. I do think that the multiverse concept will become a big deal, and I really think that it will continue to be explored on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. I don’t know where we go from here, but I’m incredibly excited to be on this ride.

Nick Hogan:  As I previously stated, I think the most important thing is that we don’t lose the progress that each character has already made, Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow included. However, seeing characters outside their comfort zone and in different ways can be really awesome when done right. One of the best things about The Flash and the rest of the DC TV Universe is that you can go in with little to no expectation and be blown away. I really want to keep that element.

Laura Schinner: Time travel confuses me. A lot. And I’m not afraid to admit that I don’t totally understand the ending of the season finale of The Flash. I’m pretty sure there was a big black hole over the city, but I have no idea what that means for next season or the other shows, or if it will even change the CW/DC Universe. But I will say that while I enjoy that these shows exist in the same universe, part of me is hesitant when big things like this happen. Because while I love the crossovers, in some ways I still want the shows to be separate. I liked that Arrow didn’t have superpowers or time travel or anything like that. But now The Flash does, so they have to as well. And if whatever happened in The Flash finale affects Arrow, I’m not sure if that’ll be a good thing. Whatever happens, I just hope the writers can handle the complications that might arise and reverberate throughout this whole universe they’ve helped create.

Randy Dankievitch: My biggest worry is that Legends of Tomorrow is going to over-saturate The Flash/Arrow shared universe, which already struggles at times to maintain the weight of so many characters and stories. Many think Arrow suffered this year because of the attention being paid to establishing The Flash – will the same thing happen next season? Another notable concern is how The Flash exists in its second season; how does it continue to operate multiple timelines throughout a 23-episode season? It’s not going to be an easy task, as the last two episodes of the season showed; they knocked it out of the park there, but that is going to be a tough, tough act to follow.

Araceli Aviles: So much of the DC universe and the way it was portrayed in entertainment used to depend on movies; that’s not the case anymore. Television, specifically The CW, is taking over the arena in a big way. Why it’s so successful is because instead of shying away from the vast, sometimes tumultuous and confusing, incarnations of superheroes, Marc Guggenheim and his team have been diligent in their research and their planning, which is why The Flash was so successful.

Tiffany Chang:  I think that it will change quite a lot because those who were villains are now going to be the good guys on Legends of Tomorrow, and it will be interesting to see if said villains will remain on the good side and not cross back over to the dark side. I hope that it will have a positive effect on The Flash when it returns in the fall because I would hate for it to lose its quality in terms of the overall plot/storyline.

Blaise Hopkins: I’m hoping that the inclusion of Captain Cold and Heat Wave into Legends of Tomorrow doesn’t take them away from popping up multiple times in Season 2 of The Flash. Those characters are staple Flash characters, and I want to see them interact more. I liked that they were in a bunch of episodes this first season, but I really want to watch them be developed through The Flash and not Legends of Tomorrow.

Chris King: Hopefully, the wormhole at the end of the Season 1 finale doesn’t cause too many changes for The Flash, Arrow, or Legends of Tomorrow. Too much time travel could create a lot of unnecessary issues for all three series, and while I think it’s a fun and interesting concept, I’d rather The Flash stick to what it does best and continue to tell strong stories in the present. Although, I wouldn’t mind Barry taking a trip to past or future again, somewhere down the line.
