The reviews are in on Ghost in the Shell and I would say that so far they’ve been outstanding. Many people are saying the film redefines animé and that an entirely new genre of film has arrived. And for those who don’t realize this yet, the new Scarlett Johansson starred feature is based on and completely modeled after the classic 1995 movie of the same name. The 1995 film was directed by Mamoru Oshii and based on a manga series by Masamune Shirow, and was considered a masterpiece. Its influence was far-reaching — most notably on The Matrix.
Despite the fact that the movie featured a gorgeous character whose figure was often eye distracting, we must also take into account the the movie asked a ton of interesting philosophical questions pertaining to cyber security as well as artificial intelligence. Now that the film is out today in its new form, it’s pretty interesting to see how critics reacted to the original 1995 version.
Until today this review by Siskel & Ebert hadn’t been uploaded to Youtube and I think you’ll find it extremely interesting. You’ll be able to tell just how ahead of its time the movie was based on what the two are saying.
