Daryl Hannah is what a lot of us might call an oldie but a goodie at this point since despite being in her late 50s she’s still old enough that a lot of can remember growing up watching her and being excited to see her come on screen. As we got older she seemed to show up less and less, but once again when she did it was something special to watch since she hadn’t really lost a step over the years. Instead it was almost as though she’d continued to mature as she aged, meaning that her acting abilities had finally ripened into something you could call worthy of legendary status. Let’s be honest, she’s always been very good at what she does, but at the same time she’s had to make her way up just like everyone else and really gain the kind of acclaim that many actors want. Every now and then she might have seemed to disappear, but when she came back full force she was just as good if not better.
Here are some of her best movies.
5. Grumpier Old Men
Obviously these movies focused more around Max and John, but Melanie was still a rather important figure since her emotional well-being was so important to her father and her budding relationship with Jacob was finally allowed to culminate in this movie. As a character she wasn’t the most important but she did show up when and where she was needed to add context and a bit of something else to the story. In the end she and Jacob wound up eloping instead of going through the long, drawn-out process of marriage and it was Max who finally wound up getting a nice wedding to cap it all off.
4. Wall Street
Surprisingly Darien didn’t warrant a whole lot of attention when it came to comparing her to the rest of the cast but it did seem a though she was one of the more prominent figures in the story for a while. But given that she turns on Bud after he decides to go against Gekko she does kind of stand as a pivot point that helps Bud to decide just what it is that he wants to do. She actually received a Razzie for this role which is something that no actor should ever aspire to since it’s not the most prestigious award around. In fact its the last award that many people ever want to get since it carries a pretty embarrassing stigma.
3. Steel Magnolias
Annelle is the young woman in the bunch that is completely besotted with her religion and tends to see it as more than just a belief system, but a guide for her entire life. The only problem is that sometimes she tends to spout the words of the gospel and the beliefs a little too much for the liking of others. When Shelby passes on for instance it was the wrong time for her to speak to M’Lynn about how Shelby was now reunited with Jesus and how they should be happy for her. Thankfully M’Lynn wasn’t really the violent type or Shelby might have been counting teeth through broken glasses at that moment since it’s not much of a relief when you want your daughter there with you instead of up in heaven.
2. Kill Bill vol. 2
Elle is about as cold-blooded as they come and the best part is that despite the end of the fight in this movie it was left open so as to make people wonder if she’s still alive or if the black mamba that she brought along finished the job. The fact is that she and Beatrix were on pretty even ground, despite Beatrix being exhausted. But were Beatrix fully rested and prepared it seems likely that Elle might be just a little outmatched in this instance, but not so much that she would lose so handily. For this fight it’s a little obvious that she wasn’t taking Beatrix as a serious threat until it was much too late.
1. Splash
This is still a favorite of many people since it happens to be one of the best movies she’s ever been in. Back in the days when Tom Hanks and John Candy were still relatively young this movie was one of those that you watched because it was funny, touching, and admittedly some folks wanted to see Daryl Hannah almost nude despite the fact that the movie wasn’t about to show that much of her. It’s more of a kid’s film after all and exposing her in that way would have jumped it up to an R or at least a PG-13 rating at least. Given that it was rated PG it still indicates that it showed just enough that parents were deemed necessary for viewing.
She’s still one of the best no matter what it said.
