If you’re wondering how to fill the next few months, then wonder no more. Team Kaylie is set to deliver all the entertainment and light relief you need to see you through the dark days of winter. Netflix’s hot new crowd-pleaser is a live-action comedy that completes the network’s very promising fall schedule…and if the early signs are anything to go by, it’s going to be big. Find out all you need to know about the show with these 10 quick facts.
1. Bryana Salaz leads the cast
Heading up Team Kaylie’s line up of hot young talent is the pop singer and actress, Bryana Salaz, Salaz first came to fame as the sensational star of Gwen Stefani’s team on season 7 of The Voice. Since then, she’s made the successful transition into acting, appearing in 7 episodes of Best Friends Whenever as Daisy, 20 episodes of The Lion Guard as Anita, and most recently, 7 episodes of Malibu Rescue as Logan. She’s also lent her vocal talents to the animation series, Star vs. the Forces of Evil, as Teen Meteora.
2. It’s from the creators of Jessie and Bunk’d
Team Kylie comes from the same team of Tracy Bitterolf and Pamela Eells O’Connell that created hit shows Jessie and Bunk’d.., and if it has even half the success of either one of those, Netflix is in for some good times ahead. For those that don’t remember, Jesse was the late 1990s sitcom starring Christina Applegate, Bruno Campos and Eric Lloyd. A hit with the viewers and a regular fixture in the top 20 Nielson ratings, Jesse was eventually canceled after NBC decided it was losing too much ground to the mighty Friends. Bunk’d, meanwhile, is the mega-successful comedy series starring Peyton List, Karan Brar, and Skai Jackon. Originally conceived as a spin-off to Jesse, Bunk’d is now very much a show in its own right, with 4 hugely popular seasons under its belt.
3. It revolves around a social media star
Team Kylie revolves around social media star Kaylie Konrad (Bryana Salaz), a multimillionaire with a lifestyle you can only dream of… until her involvement in a car accident gets her sentenced to community service at the Wilderness Club. After reluctantly taking charge of the club’s ragtag assortment of young members, Kaylie starts to develop a whole new perspective on life.
4. The first season will have 20 episodes
If you had any plans for the rest of 2019, cancel them now. Unlike some shows that pack all their entertainment into just a handful of episodes, the producers of Team Kaylie clearly see no reason to cut short a show they’ve put so much effort into. Lucky fans can expect to be kept entertained for a full 20 episodes.
5. It’s got a veteran at the helm
Team Jessie is directed by Bob Koherr, a veteran of the industry who made his directorial debut back in 1997 with the Pulp Fiction parody, Plump Fiction. Since then, he’s gone on to steer the ship at everything from Anger Management, The Drew Carey Show, Wanda at Large, Still Standing, and Freddie George Lopez to Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place, Good Luck Charlie, The Suite Life on Deck and Cristela. He’s also not averse to appearing on camera himself, having made numerous appearances on shows such as Cybill, Party of Five, Nash Bridges, The Pretender, Malcolm in the Middle, Close to Home, Weeds, and Seven Days.
6. The cast is super young
If you thought the lead actress Bryana Salaz was young enough (she’ll be 23 on her next birthday), then grab yourself a drink and prepare yourself to hear the ages of the rest of the cast. Kai Calhoun (who will be tacking the role of Ray Ray) is just 13, Alison Fernandez (who will play Amber) is only 14, while Ellie Samouhi (who plays Chewy) is 12 years old. The remainder of the Wildness Club’s assortment of pre-teens actors are similarly young, similarly gifted, and similarly able to make you feel old, arthritic, and ever so slightly grumpy.
7. Watch out for a familiar face
While the youngsters are unquestionably the stars of this youth-centric show, Netflix hasn’t neglected to employ a few over 25’s to keep their diversity stats up. Rosa Blasi, the 46-year-old veteran from shows such as The Bold and The Beautiful, Frasier, Becker, Caroline in the City, V.I.P., Grown-Ups, Beverly Hills, 90210, and General Hospital, will be taking on the role of Kit.
8. Nicole Sullivan will be playing the school Principle
Rosa Blasi isn’t the only adult to have made the cast. Nicole Sullivan will also be making an appearance as Principle Dana, the bitter administrator determined to make Kaylie’s life as difficult as possible. Prior to her casting in Team Kaylie, Sullivan was best known for the sketch show MADtv and the CBS sitcom The King of Queens. She’s also taken starring roles in the short-lived but fondly remembered Nickelodeon sitcom Wendell and Vinnie, and the Disney Channel original movie Let it Shine.
9. It completes a great Fall lineup
Even if you’re not convinced Team Kaylie is the show for you, you’re guaranteed to find something to please in this Fall’s amazingly promising line up from Netflix. Inside Bill’s Brain: Decoding Bill Gates is a must-watch for tech geeks, while the darkly comic The Politician is guaranteed to have you wanting more from its stellar cast of Jessica Lange, Ben Platt and Gwyneth Paltrow. Other highlights include Rhythm + Flow, Living With Yourself, and the hotly anticipated third season of The Crown.
10. You can join the audience
If you’re not content with simply sitting at home watching Team Kaylie, then you’re in luck. The show is a live-action comedy, which basically means that if you can afford the price of a ticket, you get to view the action as it happens as part of the show’s live studio audience.
