Here’s What ‘Suicide Squad’ Needs to Succeed

A Unique Joker

This one seems certain, but Suicide Squad absolutely has to create its own Joker. Each live-action (and animated) portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime has been completely different from what came before, and each take has been fun to watch. The thing working against Jared Leto’s first turn as the character is the fact that he’s having to follow Heath Ledger’s Academy Award-winning performance in The Dark Knight, but audiences simply have to put that out of their minds in order to appreciate what Leto can do.

For better or worse, Ledger really didn’t give a very comic-accurate performance as the Joker (more or less being an original character using the name, but that’s a conversation for another time), and it seems like Suicide Squad will be taking a completely different route. The film is making the Joker its own, certainly (particularly through the tattoos and the grill), but it’s also drawing heavily from the entire history of the Joker from the comics, pulling aspects from different writers into a singular entity. Trailers have already promised plenty of homages to Jokers past, so I can’t wait to see what Leto can do here.
