It’s fun to look back at when Stephen Colbert was on Comedy Central. He was a bit less censored, younger looking, and definitely raw at that time. If you go back into his career and look at moments where he truly “arrived” then you should look no further than his appearance at the 2006 White House Correspondents dinner where he roasted then President George W. Bush. What’s truly interesting is that if you fast forward to 4:12 in this video you’ll see him using the phrase “no fact zone” which he asked Fox News to coin for him. While it’s not as catchy as “fake news” it’s certainly close.
It’s not easy to stand up on a podium for over 20 minutes making fun of an administration to the actual administration itself but I think we got our first glimpse of Colbert as a successful late night talk show host right here. You can tell he still needs some seasoning but it’s not even his fault. I just think the majority of the crowd still didn’t quite know who he was or what he was about.
But it’s evident that George Bush certainly respected his routine and by the end of this, everyone knew exactly who Stephen Colbert was.
