Spongebob Squarepants an innovative cartoon series that premiered on May 1, 1999. Created by Stephen Hillenburg Spongebob Squarepants became a jewel in the crown of the Nickelodeon Network. Everyone loved the catchy theme song sang out by Painty the Pirate and a group of unseen children. Painty asks “Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?” And the kids shout out “SpongeBob SquarePants!” Even adults cannot help liking some of the quirky characters who live in the fictional undersea world of Bikini Bottom.
The premise is goofy and just plain fun. There have been, however, rumors, urban legends and Creepypasta stories about this series with wild interpretations of the characters and their motivations. The series has been lampooned and even placed in adult content fan fiction. Spongebob Squarepants has entered the pop culture consciousness like few modern animated series ever do. No wonder someone decided to imagine what Spongebob Squarpants would look like Japanese Anime Style.
A YouTube animator named Namark created quite a powerful anime style trailer to replace Spongebob’s iconic theme song. In a word, the trailer is “nuts” but nuts in a wonderful way. So much is happening that it’s hard to keep up but we will try to break down the video “The SpongeBob SquarePants Anime – OP 1”
The weird Painty Pirate intro is the same but then again that was so oddly wonderful that no changes were needed but then comes the otherworldly musical strains and Japanese singing that let you know something different is this way coming. Anime Spongebob appears on screen with the prerequisite anime style close up of his eyeball pupils which look a bit sinister. He is still a sponge but he is rather irregular and streamlined. He stands on a road at sunset about to go on a quest of sorts it seems. Next up is Squidward Tentacles, in a sinister incarnation. Sandy the Texan Squirrel is also on hand in anime makeover form–no longer goofy looking she now wears a take no prisoners expression. she must be on the side of the good guys.
A cryptic message reading “Are you feeling it now Mr. Krabbs?” appears in what looks like a ransom note on the screen. Spongebob is no longer breezing down the road, he is running to fulfill his destiny, just like a good anime character should. Has Squidward finally gone postal?
Patrick has given up his baggy board shorts for a speedo. He’s wielding a samurai sword. Can this be happening? What kind of alternate universe is this anyway?
Now Sandy’s back and she’s kicking Squidward’s butt after he has been somehow been injected with some sort of drug. Then Patrick takes on Anime Squidward and just when you think he might have gotten in a good blow, his neck is encircled in red and his head and starfish arm drop off. Wow, this does get grisly but then again this is anime, so this is fine. There may be a doctor somewhere who can put him back together. Apparently, Patrick needed more sword fighting lessons. Spongebob goes all dark-eyed and Ninja crazy upon seeing his best friend cut to pieces. Just when his Spongebob’s berserk button has been pushed and he’s ready to do some serious payback, the scene abruptly switches.
Spongebob is back in his little Pineapple House Gary comes in and Spongebob abruptly switches the channel to sports. The viewer, meanwhile, is left wondering what we just saw. Youtuber’s had quite the reaction to Spongebob Anime Style. Everyone found it intriguing, although Patrick in a thong flopping around was a bit much as well as his getting diced and sliced. Could this imaginative anime version of Spongebob Squarepants ever become a reality? We can only dream.
