SNL’s Weekend Update Could be Headed for Primetime on NBC

Saturday Night Live may still be one of the most popular shows airing on network TV each Saturday evening, but ratings were on a relatively steady decline, until now.  With Donald Trump taking the helm in the White House, viewership is up a whopping 22 percent.  The rise has been highlighted by Alec Baldin’s Trump character and just this weekend Melissa McCarthy’s portrayal of Sean Spicer grabbed audiences by storm.  So what’s a show to do to capitalize on this success?

It turns out that SNL’s Weekend Update hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che could be headed for primetime.   According to Politico, NBC is mulling over a weekly, 30-minute version of Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update.  The spinoff would likely air on Thursday nights, and debut in the fall.  According to TVline

This wouldn’t be the first time Update has aired in primetime. In October 2008, Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler presided over Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday in the weeks leading up to the election between Barack Obama and John McCain. It returned for an additional six episodes in 2009, followed by a brief comeback in September 2012.

Anyone think this is a good idea?  The reality is that weekend update already lasts for over 10 minutes so this wouldn’t be a huge stretch.  I for one think that Jost and Che have excellent chemistry and that this would be welcomed idea by a lot of people.  If it were to air in primetime they might not be able to get away with some of the raunchier things that come with late night, but who knows?

Do you think Weekend Update on Thursday’s is a good idea?
